Pretoria - Common ground on affirmative action should be found, ANC president Jacob Zuma told a largely white Afrikaner gathering on Thursday night.

Addressing a dinner hosted by trade union Solidarity, he told union members that they had no other home than South Africa and as such their concerns should be taken seriously.

"Whatever issues you raise are aimed at making our country more successful, and to create a better future for your children," he said.

Zuma, who arrived early, met separately for almost half-an-hour with the Solidarity leadership.

Afterward he addressed a dinner gathering. "Being a former trade unionist, I feel at home in a gathering of workers such as this one," Zuma said.

He highlighted several issues of concern, including the country's skills shortage, the crime and electricity crises, but focused on affirmative action.

Zuma said affirmative action was needed to ensure the sustainability of freedom and economic growth.

Perceptions

"The majority of the population in any country would have to feature prominently in the economy to ensure long-term growth and sustainable development," Zuma said.

He indicated that the implementation of affirmative action was not an easy task.

"Some perceive the efforts to remove white or male privilege as an assault on the rights of white South Africans or on the rights of male South Africans. We need to answer such perceptions," Zuma said.

"The lack of discussion and debate creates assumptions and suspicions that are not very real."

The only way to do this was by sitting down and discussing the issue.

"I know your concern that young white South Africans feel they cannot enter the labour market, and the fact that positions remain unfilled because the necessary affirmative action skills are not available.

Common ground

"Let us find time to engage on these issues thoroughly and see how we can find common ground, for the common good of the country.

"We all seek a society in which no person is privileged at the expense of another, and that no person is oppressed for the benefit of another."

On crime he said "drastic action" was needed.

"We can not sit with this problem for another decade. I am aware that you seek further and more intensive engagement on issues, and we would certainly welcome that opportunity," Zuma said.

Solidarity general secretary Flip Buys said the fact that Zuma was prepared to speak at the gathering showed that he was committed to the cause of people and workers in South Africa.

He had highlighted several questions which were troubling Solidarity members. These include the skills problem, affirmative action, crime and electricity crises, mother tongue education, what they termed new poverty, and problems and solutions.

Strong leadership

"Mr Zuma, it is our view that our country urgently needs strong leadership that is aimed at restoring the confidence of the citizenry in the state - not just government."

Buys said the government could not single-handedly solve the country's problems.

"It is a fact that there are serious problems to which nobody pays attention, problems that are so serious that approximately one million people have already abandoned the country and thousands of others are so despondent that they are also considering leaving.

"These are problems that can be resolved, if only government were prepared to listen to us," Buys said.

Remember - this is the same monkey who saw nothing wrong with kicking white journalists out of a press conference.
 
Look at what he is saying

the people on Mitchels plain : Vote for the death penalty
Farmers : We support you
Traditional Leaders : Sure you can have representation in parliament
Whites : We need to fix AA
Poor People : Social grants and houses should be accessible, Jobs for all
Buisness people : We support you and will help create jobs.


He then goes to Marituis and tells a foreign court that 'He is being framed and the ANC is out to get him'
 
This morning when reading the paper I saw this and for a moment I thought he might be our salvation. It must've been because I was sleepy because one nice slap to the face woke me up and I realized this is just BS butt-kissing. If only it were true :(

Zuma is aligned to the working class and Mbeki was more of an elitist . I dont think the money -pushers really back Zuma .
 
If Zuma can deliver on his promises, it will be a great country.

Problem is, he needs to convince us first.

We have been lied to so many times, who can blame us for being sceptic?

Mbeki kept the rand stable.... what more could you ask for? Zuma is wanting to change everything, this method scares investors... and without investors, SA cant pay its deficit. (as this is primarily funded BY interest accrued)

Zuma doesnt have a METHOD, he shoots from the hip (pun intended). Investors want to know HOW he is going to achieve his targets, not 'Dont worry its OK' speeches he is spewing out left/right and centre.

If your boss came to you and said 'Dont worry, the company is in good shape and everyones jobs are secure' .... what would YOU think?

Who put Zuma in the position he is in now? the ANC! , now how can he claim they are out to get him. Cummon... that argument just doesnt wash.

He has caught the DA syndrome. The DA say "Don't worry, WE can make things OK"

You can keep some of the people happy some of the time,you cannot keep all the people happy all the time.

He is promising everybody what they want to hear.

Not good.
 
I would love to see a politician work through a list of actions in the following fashion:
1.) Great big announcement of a plan to address a certain issue
2.) Solution of said issue
3.) Great big announcement of successful solution and announcement of next issue to tackle.

If you work in any corporate structure on the planet this is what the organisation would expect of you.
If you build boats for a living, you'd meet with your customers, create a statement of work (I am going to build a boat for you that conforms to the following parameters) you would then build the boat, deliver it and thenget paid.

Why then do countries accept just about anything from their leaders after having appointed them through a democratic process?

Its not democracy that does not work, IMO people in general are just a bunch of low expectation havin' mother******* to paraphrase Chris Rock.

What does all this have to do with JZ's waffle? Well, if we were intelligent people we'd see these statements as a list of things to hold him accountable for and then hold him accountable for them.
This simply does not happen in S.A. and thats why our leaders are idiots - because they can get away with it. It has f-all to do with the concentration of pigment in their skin; historical oppression; poverty or education.
They know they can get away with it ...and we let them.
 
The only way to find out if it is the truth or if it is lies, is to wait it out.

We can all give our personal opinions, but that wont change the situation at hand. So what if Zuma tells everyone what they want to hear....Things will change in this country only when South Africans start getting positive about the future again. Ja, sure things are going really bad, but are we going to sit back and wait for it to get worse or are we going to find solutions for our problems. Sad but TRUE

mmm.... lets see.... ok, just off the top of my head here:
An uninterrupted, reliable source of power.
A comprehensive (comprehendable?) policy on HIV / AIDS.
An end 'quiet diplomacy' on Zimbabwe (totally way too late at this stage).

Zuma is a bigot.

He would have had my support if he had a history of achieving things or getting things done. He doesn't, other than his grade 6 certificate. All he does is shoot his mouth, telling ignorant people what they want to hear.

Top of that, the rape, corruption charges.

Why do you think educated people do not support the ANC/Zuma? They're EDUCATED thats why
