Zumagabe

South Africa is nothing like Zim and comparing Zuma to Mugabe is complete nonsense.

These are just comments by people who actually want to make the situation seem like there is no hope.

Changes will happen, and they may be for the good of the country and it's people.

For once, maybe instead of looking at all the bad things are making up stupid stories about all the horrible things that are going to happen to white people, can't we just give him our support and look at the positive side of things, he may bring about incredible changes!

If he can provide us with 50Mbps uncapped VDSL2 at R250pm then I will sing Umshinwami.

His done nothing as this country is vice president except waste the taxpayers money on corruption and rape trials... This is africa, he will make tell promises to get into power. Don criticize us for calling him the next mugabe...

He did say some disconcerting stuff, but I think it's too early to tell. Could go either way IMO.

Besides, if the stuff really hits the fan (unlikely), one can always hop on a plane.

zuma has the backing of sexwale and i think he will be our best black president, even better than mandela

I don't think he will be the best at all. Mandela will hold that position for ever. He was such a unifying force.

im sorry but mbeki is doing sweet $%^&all for this country so any change will be a good change

Here I agree with you. Mbeki was doing bugger all and allowing him a third term would have resulted in another Mugabe. He would hold on to power as long as he could. At least with Zuma there is a chance it won't happen.

I don't think that Zuma is good, but rather he was the lesser of two evils. The best choice would have been Ramaphosa.

The problem with Zuma is that he's not the brightest fish in the bowl. I agree that it could go either way but at least thats better then certain problems with a Mbeki win.

I think he has failed his first test already.
The people of the country are dying to hear the man talk after his victory but instead he chooses silence and to address the conference members first. Press conference cancelled.

Are the representatives to him now more important than the people they represent?
Bad form!

No-one knows Zuma's game plan.... there has not been 1 word on his policies spoken...

I dont think Zuma could be listed as the lesser of the evils :D

his speech tomorrow should clarify this tho' (I hope)

The way I understand it, it's not about policies as the ANC decides the policies not the person. That said, it will be easy to see what the situation will become by who he surrounds himself with.

What worries me is the comments made by some of the members and delegates that Mr Zuma is "for the poor".
Why is this comment even made? Do some people honestly believe that Zuma, as SA President, will provide "handouts" to the underprivileged? Is this what some people base their support on: Handouts/Charity/Free[jobs, houses, water/electricity]?

I do agree there... but if its the ANC that decides all the policies, WHY was there a contest between Mbeki and Zuma? If they are just pawns in the game of chess, why are they fighting each other? If the ANC executive council are the ones in control, why not just put some other neutral figurehead in charge? .. why all the cloak and dagger stuff

Too many questions.... not enough answers

GO ZUMA U BEAUTY

ok in 5 years time when family looses their homes and gets kicked out of the country i will be very wrong but until that comes zuma has my backing

Yes, far too many questions. The biggest problem was that Mbeki was standing. If he had won, the constitution would have been changed to allow a third (or even forth/fifth) term. That would have been a real sin.

On the other hand, I don't think there is much Zuma can do over the next few years. There is going to be a massive recession after 2010. That is likely to bring other problems with the unemployment rising and could well lead to a Zim type of situation. I don't plan to be here to find out, Telkoms abuse of the bandwidth has made it impossible to run my company from here.

It is a real shame that we are so backward in this field when for all intense and purposes South Africa had the ability to have been leaders in Africa and beyond by now. Opportunity lost, big time!
Listening this evening to Economist Chris Hart on Summit TV it is quite evident that Government is mostly to blame for the situation the country is in today. Rising interest rates and inflation is extremely worrying.
Government who should be curbing rising charges for all sorts of things from Rates and Taxes, Water, Electricity etc have not played the ball, but instead have hiked Rates and Taxes out of line with Inflation and now they are going to push for high teen increases in Electricity citing that our country is still the cheapest as far as Electricity is concerned. It seems Government seeks any means to squeeze the consumer. Everything they touch just becomes more expensive.

People with homes are feeling the pinch as much of their income is going to service the Bond and pay Rates, Water and Electricity.
With no competition in Telecoms your Phone Bill was also pushed out of all proportion post 1998. These are all the basic needs a home needs to survive and all the items mentioned in this paragraph are either directly of indirectly controlled by Government in some form or other.

It is easy to push up interest rates, but Businesses in turn must add the costs on to the consumer in one big vicious circle.
I don't buy into this consumer credit nonsense.
Government is trying to cool the Economy but sets a Growth Target of 6%pa?
My question to Government is what happens after the Building Boom stops? What other plans have they got going forward to stimulate the economy. Does Government realise that The Economy is technically at the beginning of a skid downwards? :(
Even Morgan Stanley downgraded South Africa this week.

You should rephrase the question. It should be what happens after the Credit Boom that funded the Building Boom stops.

One word: BOOM!

Morgan Stanley lost 9 billion dollars in the credit screw up. It's SOOO bad that yesterday they even sold 10% of their company to the CHINESE!

The ANC has been borrowing like a drunken sailor and the pigeons will come home to roost in a couple of years.

Zuma can't even balance his checking account, how do people expect him to run a country?

Hiya Obaht,

As far as I am concerned the Credit Boom has stopped. Retailers are feeling the pinch already with slower sales the last few months. This is going to filter down into the Economy during 2008.
If the SARB hikes Interest Rates again next month I reckon things will get even worse with Consumers being squeezed even harder. Economist Chris Hart stated that we should not rely on The SARB alone to quell Inflation and spoke of all the other ways that Inflation can be curbed and one of the things he mentioned was all the Industries that have legislative protection forming Monopolistic Competition Scenarios and our prime example of this in South Africa is Telkom. With Telkom, prices went up and jobs were shed, whereas the Cell Phone Industry he mentioned that this business has achieved enormous penetration into the market place and at the same time employed more people.
Hart mentioned that Eskom should also be privatised and although I understand his reasoning I just hear warning bells against a move like this as I fear another Telkom Scenario with no benefit to the consumer with higher tariffs.

Either way things are looking a bit tougher for 2008 in the Economy.
How Mr Zuma is going to be able to steer our Economy into rougher seas in years to come is anyone's guess. With Mbeki we have someone with a Degree in Economics vs Zuma with no formal Education and a Financial Advisor who sits in jail on fraud.

What happens when JZ, Thabo and the rest of the "old gaurd" get too old for the games they play with eachother. What fate will we be left to. There doesn't seem to be another serious contender for the top post.

And now it starts....

The days of the elite crime-fighting unit, the Scorpions, are numbered.

The Scorpions will be disbanded by June next year at the latest, according to discussions at the ANC's national conference on Wednesday.
The perception that the crimefighting unit was used by senior government officials to target Zuma was said to be one of the principal reasons for its demise.

So who is going to tackle high profile crime now.
The Police?
