DStv Premium streaming package launched for R699

MultiChoice has launched a 12-month contract for its streaming-only DStv Premium package for R699 per month. The new deal was added to the DStv website on Tuesday morning.

The offer was released with an update to the DStv Stream app, promising enhancement to the user experience.

“The latest update introduces significant upgrades to the user interface,” MultiChoice said.

“Live TV rows now play back channels as users browse, letting them preview content directly from the homepage, allowing them to immediately jump into live TV.”

Additionally, Live TV rows display channels and events, making it easier for users to see what’s happening now and what’s coming up next.

“This latest update is a big step forward, especially for live sports,” said MultiChoice South Africa CEO Marc Jury.

“It’s a fantastic way to dive into everything that SuperSport has on offer.”

The update also introduces eight new display types for video-on-demand rows, providing previews to encourage users to explore content beyond their usual selections.

The “Explore More” section offers a deeper selection of specific genres, collections, and curated content, giving trending and niche content greater visibility.

MultiChoice said updated navigation on tvOS and iOS platforms aims to make content discovery more intuitive and visually engaging.

New features such as billboards and lead tiles serve to spotlight featured, new, and exclusive titles.

New display formats now play trailers directly on the homepage, while live channels stream automatically upon landing on the page.

“This is the second in a series of DStv enhancements over the coming months that will improve user experience and platform stability,” MultiChoice said.

“We are looking to announce the next one in a few weeks’ time.”

MultiChoice said early numbers show that these updates are making a positive impact on the user experience.

It has seen a 23% increase in the number of series and movies streamed on demand, a 17% increase in the number of titles that customers have added to their watchlists, and an overall 8% increase in content watched on DStv Stream compared to the previous month.

The R699 per month offer for DStv Premium is a return to a price point first introduced as a promotion in November 2021.

It made the R699 price permanent in September 2022.

Since then, MultiChoice has not increased the prices of its streaming-only DStv packages in South Africa, only applying annual price adjustments to its decoder-based services.

However, in a bid to curb password sharing and streaming piracy, the pay-TV broadcaster cut the number of simultaneous streams available across all its packages — decoder-based and streaming.

To address the loss of functionality from this move, MultiChoice introduced the Extra Stream feature last year. This allowed subscribers to add an additional mobile stream to their package for a fee.

DStv also introduced new packages with a bundled extra mobile stream. For example, it launched a DStv Premium streaming-only package with an extra mobile stream for R799 per month.

Soon, the single-stream variant for R699 per month was grandfathered, and new subscribers could only buy the new R799 package.

MultiChoice has now brought back a R699 per month option, albeit on a 12-month contract, but with an additional mobile stream already bundled.
