SA scammer caught in action

Fraud binary data

A call centre agent for Mr. Price Money foiled the attempt of a conman to regain access to the account of Knysna man he had defrauded in January 2014.

Previously the scammer had gained control over cellphone number of Mr. Thompson by porting it from Vodacom to Cell C, after which he used it to access Thompson’s cellphone banking accounts.

One of the accounts from which the scammer took money was the target’s Mr. Price Money account.

With control of the victim’s cellphone number, the fraudster was able to use an USSD command available to Mr. Price Money clients to buy airtime to the value of R3,508.35.

When Thompson reported the fraud to Mr. Price, they blocked the option to buy airtime and four days later gave him a full refund.

The fraudster, perhaps unsatisfied with his take, tried to regain access to Thompson’s Mr. Price Money account some weeks later by phoning the call centre.

The call centre agent quickly realises that the person calling is not Mr. Thompson and gets a little aggressive with her caller.

An audio recording of the call is embedded below for your listening pleasure:
