South African scammer caught in action

I wish they could easily identify scammers like this... but good on the call centre agent for not divulging any personal info!
 
Good on Mr Price for refunding the customer, even though it probably wasn't their fault. Too bad ABSA and MTN can't take a page from their book.

Didn't she just follow protocol or a script?

The headline is totally misleading, he was not caught. This seems the become a habit.

My only listening pleasure would be his voice as he is arrested. How did he port the number from Voda to Cell C in the first place? There's a whole other fraud issue.

That wasn't exactly high class social engineering and I think the operator generally followed SOP, BUT she DID identify the caller as suspicious and deserves some praise for that.

This remains the major concern.

As for how they do it - it's mostly insiders. The insiders either get paid by syndicates or share some of the profit from the scam or they are just blackmailed/threatened.
