Cell C slashes prepaid, contract prices
Cell C has announced significant pre-paid and contract price cuts with new products that will become available on 1 June 2014.
“We listened and turned 99c on its head,” Cell C CEO Jose Dos Santos told journalists during an event at their headquarters in Midrand on 13 May 2014.
Dos Santos said that from the start of June Cell C will have a new pre-paid tariff plan that subscribers can switch to which offers a call rate of 66c/minute, billed per second.
This new pre-paid tariff plan will be available until the end of September, with its renewal dependant on the outcome of the Mobile Termination Rate Review that the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa is currently undertaking.
Cell C’s SupaCharge feature won’t be available on the new 66c/minute plan.
79c/minute month-to-month contracts
Subscribers who prefer contracts will be able to sign up for one of 3 new month-to-month contracts that have a call rate of 79c/minute.
The contracts will be called ChatMore Standard, ChatMore 200, and ChatMore 400, Dos Santos said.
He emphasised that little commitment is needed on these contracts as a subscriber can give a month’s notice if they don’t like the service.
“For those who have their own handset, ChatMore Standard brings the new lower rate with no monthly fees. Customers will only pay for what they use,” Cell C said in a press release that followed the launch.
“On ChatMore 200, customers will received 200 any-net minutes, as well as 150MB of free data, for R159. On ChatMore 400, customers will be given 400 any-net minutes and 300MB of free data, for R319 per month.”
Asked whether Cell C’s current contract customers could look forward to a price cut, Dos Santos said that existing subscribers could switch to ChatMore when their contract comes up for renewal.
