Cell C BlackBerry abusers identified
Cell C says that it has identified a list of BlackBerry abusers, and that these abusers will be throttled to ensure that the network quality is not affected.
Abuse of the unlimited BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) has been dogging operators, and forced Vodacom and MTN to implement throttling and monthly usage limits respectively.
To date Cell C and 8ta has not implemented these measures, but Cell C explained that the time has come to clamp down on BlackBerry users who bypass the restrictions associated with the service.
“We are monitoring abuse on the BlackBerry OS service and have identified a list of less than 150 users that have used more than 5.4TB of data between 1 April and 20 April on the BlackBerry service,” said Cell C spokesperson Karin Fourie.
Many of these users are using their handsets entirely as modems without making calls or sending messages.
“While we had hoped to avoid throttling, these users are affecting the quality of service for other users that are using the service for the purpose it was intended,” explained Fourie.
“Throttling these abusers will help free up capacity in key areas and increase quality for subscribers that use the service appropriately.”
Fourie said that Cell C has updated its BlackBerry Terms and Conditions to reflect a potential fair usage limit, which will only be implemented for abusers of the BlackBerry service.
