Adblock Plus versus Facebook
Facebook recently made changes so it can show ads on its desktop site to people using ad blocking software.
This means the company has found a way to bypass ad blockers – but how it achieved this is not known.
It did not take the ad-blocking community long to figure the system out, finding a way to block ads on Facebook again.
Adblock Plus added a new filter to the main EasyList, which make advertisements disappear on Facebook.
“The filter lists that tell Adblock Plus what to block are the product of a global community of web citizens. This time that community seems to have gotten the better of even a giant like Facebook,” said Adblock Plus.
“This sort of back-and-forth battle between the open source ad-blocking community and circumventers has been going on since ad blocking was invented.”
Adblock Plus warned that Facebook might “re-circumvent” at any time.
This is exactly what happened. TechCrunch reported that Facebook is already rolling out a code update which will render the Adblock Plus workaround useless.
