IOL not hacked: editor

Visitors to the IOL website this morning received a malware warning from Google, saying “Warning: Something’s Not Right Here!”.  According to Google “www.iol.co.za contains malware. Your computer might catch a virus if you visit this site”.

“Google has found malicious software may be installed onto your computer if you proceed. If you’ve visited this site in the past or you trust this site, it’s possible that it has just recently been compromised by a hacker. You should not proceed, and perhaps try again tomorrow or go somewhere else,” the Google warning stated.

Internet users started speculating that the IOL website may have been hacked, but IOL editor Alastair Otter explained that the website has not been hacked. Otter said that third party content is to blame for the malware warning.

Otter said that they have identified potential content which lead to the Google malware warning, and that they switched off all suspicious third party content.

IOL will now ask Google to re-evaluate the website, and Otter hopes that the warning will be removed soon.
