AlwaysOn Wi-Fi calling: cheaper than expected

AlwaysOn

AlwaysOn announced that its Wi-Fi calling rate for calls to mobile phones and landlines are R30 per hour, and not R50 per hour as reported.

The Wi-Fi provider announced earlier this week that it will launch Wi-Fi calling on 8 June 2015.

To promote its new Wi-Fi calling, the company will have a launch promotion which offer 60 minutes of free talk time to any local cellular or landline service.

AlwaysOn previously said calls will be free between all users of AlwaysOn Calling, but calls to local fixed-line and cellular providers will be charged at R50 per hour at per second rates.

The company has now announced that this was a typo, and that the flat rate is actually R30 per hour.

AlwaysOn also provided technical details about the service. It said the service is integrated into the phone and “users don’t have to do anything”.

While it needs a smartphone app to run in the background, it is not an app-based service like Skype or WhatsApp.
