@ginggs ... eina! Head on over to the Vodacom speed test results thread :D

Does MTN not have a similar on network speed test like Vodacom (speed.vodacom.co.za)? Anyone know where these elusive 3.6/7.2 towers are in Cape Town?

If they do, they haven't advertized it.

My guess is in Cape Town centre, the airport or Century City. These were the first areas to get HSDPA.

I have sent MTN some questions via the contact us page on www.mtn.co.za. I am however not expecting much in the way of a reply...

I just did 4 speedtests on speedtest.net
me in pretoria, tested with both the triangle (!) in JHB and CPT
ping ave 216
got speeds
download : 653 , 780, 1683, 1812 woohoo!! at last :) (altho the MTN Fastlink dashboard only shows max down 1262, guess 1812 was only for microsec)
upload : 51 , 54 , 53, 56,  so much for "not" being limited to '64kbps' , and  so much for "all the 3G towers upgraded to HSUPA"!
Its clear i'm not the only one still getting the sh1tty <64kbps upload, so when is MTN gonna wakey wakey???

did some tests with VC sim, no problem getting >250kbps upload each time...

ginggs ... i notice your speeds up top.... interesting... howcome I get half the ping speed from PTA-CPT than u CPT-CPT?

Actually went around with an E220 looking for 3.6 and 7.2 with a U740.

Went to MTN's head office in Cape Town (stood outside on the pavement), Century City and the Waterfront.

Nada......

Will try airport.

sheezh, looks like some bad ping rates 4 u guys in cpt?
during my tests aved 216, from PTA to the srv in CPT, even managed a 182 once...
seems with MTN it chooses JHB triangle as prefered, on VC sees CPT as prefered

It only certain towers can handle >64kbps upload, perhaps only those upgraded to 3.6Mbps?

I think all Cape Town MTN traffic goes via Joburg!

For me, speedtest.net recommends the Cape Town server on MTN and Vodacom.

I vaguely recall some thread a month or so back about MTN asking customers to upgrade their E220 firmware, presumably at least some MTN E220 customers did upgrade their E220's firmware.
It was the E620 customers that received an SMS about a new firmware.
The new firmware supports USSD, and I've seen a new MTN dashboard with pre-paid USSD options, so that's probably the new service they mentioned in the SMS.

Unfortunately it wasn't a 3.6Mbps upgrade for the E620. :(
