What I'd like to see from Vodacom in 2009. Preferably in the earlier part of the year :D

1. Real time data billing for contract customers (long overdue)
2. Data bundle roll over - up to 60 days on 5 April 2009 - Details
3. Some competition in the mobile data space. Made up of:
3.1 Telkom (of all people) has undercut both Vodacom and MTN (who strangely enough have exactly the same pricing structure). Someone needs to make a move here.
3.2 Reduced bundle rates or larger caps for the same price when Seacom lands in the middle of the year.
4. Better out of bundle (OOB) rates or at the very least give people the same OOB rate as what their bundle is. Exmple: if you have 2GB bundle and you use it up you pay 19c/mb OOB for the remainder of the month or the 30 days in which you activated it. Implemented through Broadband Advanced on 5 April 2009 - Article - Details
5. Scrapping the R49/m 3.6 service fee. I suspect this might be under consideration once there is enough backhaul for 7.2, so you get 3.6 free and pay for 7.2. Otherwise if MTN and Telkom prove themselves Vodacom might just be forced to scrap it completely. - 3.6 service fee dropped on 1 April 2009. 7.2 Implemented as part of Broadband Advanced - Details
6. DataSIM on pre-paid and top-up.
7. Vodacom actually leveraging their Vodafone partnership to reduce handset pay-in costs. Word in the MTN forum is that Vodacom is way overpriced.
8. Consolidated account. i.e. one account for WiFi hotspots and 3G data etc. all using one pool of data (I know this is being worked on but has a number of logistical issues attached to it).
9. Free itemised billing for data on v4m. ADSL users get their data usage reports for free, why can't we?
10. Confess to your interconnect sins with MTN and give us some relief on voice costs.

Thanks for the support and the digital glue ic :)

With regards to DataSIM: I got feedback from our Vodacom corporate account person on Friday who says you can get DataSIM on a top-up contract. I was always under the impression this was not possible.

Oh yes, excellent post M..Agree on all your points above.
There are some very close to the heart ones there Ive been bleating on about here for a while now.

not much of this is gonna happen
you forgot 1, this one is for prepaid:

the prices of 10GB is the same as 5 x 2GB ! why should we wanna get more than 2GB at a time then? you're chasing your biggest customers away vodacom, and they are saving money when they only buy 3 x 2GB Bundles, if they're not using the internet as much as usual....

this is vodacom's biggest FAIL - they have no idea on what they're losing! they are making money and decide to leave everything as it is, instead of making a lot more.

Would be nice if all of this happened. I like to think that Vodacom is still one of the better providers available to us. Been with them for at least 6 years and hope to be with them for a long while still... But would definitely appreciate some improvements - not to mention some real competition with the other providers.

Vodacom would definitely go on my Christmas Card list if they implemented these suggestions, #2 especially!

Would be nice to see a poll around this. Not sure how the mods could construct it though.

I agree with some of these points, while others are not trivial to implement (real-time billing for contract, for example).

For the millionth time "Data bundle roll over"

I am sure ic can whip something up :)

So from the point of view that I:
Don't know how your systems work
Know that they are huge and often complex
Know that you have real-time billing working very well for pre-paid

As a consumer I (and I guess most others) see that Vodacom has it working for pre-paid and think, "how difficult can it be to just apply that to a contract?". Surely if it was a priority and it got some well deserved attention it could have been implemented by now.

I won't mention the fact that it took a long time to get the RTB for PP working...:o

I also thought that it should be easy to migrate the contract subs to the same RTB system, but the problem is the contract side is much more complex with 15 years worth of different types of products in there. And variations of those products. And then different permutations, etc, etc.

I'll tell you over a scotch one night what the proposed RTB system for contract will cost, as you'll need a scotch when you hear the number. :)

But it's not to say it's not going to happen. ;)

Well you did a good job of it, so well done! :)

Surely data bundles are all the same, regardless of the contract? Don't you have a way of moving the data part of a contract over to the RTB system and then just reporting the figure back to whatever needs print the statement? (simplistic description I know).

So the figure is big: I hope Vodacom is then at least taking all the big bucks made on OOB billing (and unused data due to fear of OOB) each month and sticking that into the "Implement RTB on contract kitty".

I will most gladly take you up on that scotch, in fact you might just have ginggs' attention as well. :D

But it's not to say it's not going to happen. ;)

Dare I say "imminent"? :p

@vodacom3g: I am very interested in RTB and would love to hear more! :D

Hope 2009 brings better service than this:

Ping statistics for 74.125.79.147:
Packets: Sent = 375, Received = 281, Lost = 94 (25% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 454ms, Maximum = 3590ms, Average = 640ms

Just a point of accuracy, but even prepaid does not have "Real Time Billing"
What you have is reservation and release of funds.
So, what happens is, when you connect to the data network on prepaid a "chunk" of money is reserved on your purse, and you consume against that. When that "chunk" is depleted, or nears depletion, another chunk is reserved. And so it goes.
This is why, if you check your purse before starting you might have a balance of R100, once you start you might see a balance of R80, if when you are finished you might see a balance of R60, and an hour or two later you might see a balance of R75 when the unused portion of the reserved "chunk" of money is released back into your purse.
The size of the "chunk" reserved will never exceed your available balance.
However, on post paid, the question has to be, how big do you make the "chunk".
If it is too big, then you get pissed of customers with big bills. If you make it too small you overload the billing systems with trying to manage limits.
There actually is, as yet, no such thing as "Real Time Billing"
