Does any body know what band the metropigs use for their laser and radar detectors? Ku or what?

COBRA XRS LASER DETECTOR:

http://www.autostyle.co.za/prodview...ser jammers&cid=&pg=1&showall=&brandstr=&str=

Would this work well in SA?? Anyone using one of these (or similar?)

I picked an older model up from the USA a while ago, but it never worked properly. I had lost the mount and was holding it in my hands pointing it out the front windscreen pne time merely to test if it was working or not.

At one point I pointed it right at the cop mounting the speed camera and the thing didn't even beep!? All the bands were selected in settings..

I've read somewhere the thing needs to be mounted properly so that it has signal out of the back too?

I saw the other old thread, but looking for more up-to-date info..
Thanks

I use Cobra. I bought the entry level one from autostyle and it works a charm. Piad R800 and reckon I have had a return of investment ten fold!

I am still unsure whether it is legal so i pull it off the dash if i come up to a roadblock.

it will only go off if the cop points the laser directly at your car. if they are not manning the "gun" it wont go off as they need to squeeze a trigger on the actual gun.

only downside is radar "x" which is painful in town and city, but then all you do is hit the "city" switch and it will not buzz for radar

Just read this and noted

By taking several hundred samples over the course of a third of a second or so, the accuracy can be very high

How can you slow down within a third of a second? Seems kinda pointless to me.

Surely a garmin would serve you better?

Shows far more than just the cops sitting there. I get hardly any fines, i speed and when it alerts me i slow down. Those devices are illegal as far as i know and only show you trigger cops, there are far more un manned camera's on our roads. So it does not make sense to blow 800 rand on one when a garmin is like 1.4k or something and tells you just about every speed trap

a detector is not illegal, you cannot be prosecuted for having a device that scans for light, which is what laser is. A jammer is illegal because it interferes with the law by messing up their device.

The problem with a laser is that its too quick. By the time the device alerts you the laser already trapped you and took the pic.

Garmin is nice, but for laser its annoying. they have so many places that u drive accross the city and it beeps so many times you barely go over 60 anyway.

a jammer is thus the best defense, but its illegal. until someone can find a loophole in the law thats solid...

Yes it beeps because cops either sit there sometimes.

I would rather having the garmin beeping all day than get fines.

O damn i never check dates LOL

It may be laser, but they do have to track you for a certain distance. I was driving at 140 and got a warning and slammed on brakes and they didnt pull me over. I reckon you have about 2 seconds to react. To date I have not had a single fine from laser. Granted if you clocking 220 , by the time you slow down it will be too late - but perhaps it will reduce the speed and the amount.

I use tomtom and detector and my EYES (90% of all cameras you can spot) its only when the knobs try catch you from behind and lying in the bush (so I have a second detector in the rear) hehehe...

I find the best solution is to put on some chilled cafe del mar and cruise ;)

I had one of these detectors and it was pointless most of the time. Usually by the time it detects anything, they already got you.

Jammers are your best bet, but they are illegal.

According to my cop friend you dont have to slam the brakes. The second your speed changes the laser stops measuring, you merely have to tap it. O, yes and the laser has to log measure a constant speed for I think 2 or was it 3 seconds.

correct. if you going 140 it would need to measure for 2 seconds or 60-80 meters

so as long as im always accellerating i should be fine ;)

Anyone know of a device that you can select the bands you want? I want to disable Radar or have the unit go into city mode as it powers on

Anyone heard this rumour that the trafiss are developing a NEW camera which will be able to detect your speed over dipps, around corners, farther away compared to current devices...

so if you are doing 160 in a 120 zone 4 km's away from where the traffis are sitting and there are 4 bends between you and the Metro...they'll still get you???

myth or reality?

sounds myth to me.. how would you measure if the path was not constant? I know laser has a range of 5 km with a clear line of view

Doable simply by doing license plate recognition coupled with a timer mechanism:

1. Camera 1 takes a pic of your car & logs time
2. 1/2/3/4/5 kms later, Camera2 does the same
3. Data is sent to a server which calculates the average speed between the 2 points and sent a message to metro waiting down the line.

result if you speed between the 2 cameras? Even if you slow down as you see the camera, e.g., 110 in the 120 zone. Speed up to 160 and then slow down again to 110 for the 2nd camera. But your average speed will be > 120, so you are bust.

This system is already used in the UK and was talked about being implemented on the road to Durbs too

server, avg speed and Metro police?? Oh my wooooooorrrrrrrddd!!

HAHAHAHA that will be interesting - I can see the ****e already!

The cops dont even need to pull you over, the remote speed monitoring can all be done remoetly and the fine mailed to you, you dont even need to be pulled over

Well either way, it will give us 2 opportunities to pick up the cameras with our newly purchased radar detectors... hehehe

I don't see this happening, as the pick up on both points will vary. their is no way to get a laser to mark you exactly. So how do you get an accurate avg speed? You can argue that and it will be thrown out.
