Amazon announces new Kindle

Very interesting at that price, 3G + wireless. What are the restrictions to non-Amazon documents though? PDF's and other e-books, different DRM or no DRM books?

*Edit* Well thats annoying, wanted to see total cost of shipping etc and Amazon.co.uk says they can't ship to my address even though I've bought from them before :(

You can uy them from Amazon.com but they aren't available yet. You can view PDF but no drm documents that are not in Kindle format. The mobi format works directly on the Kindle (and many of the books at guttenbergpress.org are in mobi format) and there are no problems with txt and html.
I'm thinking of getting one and giving mine to my parents. I don't have access to any free wi-fi solutions though, so I might have to go for the 3G one again.
 
Last night, my new kindle was shipped from Amazon. Today I log on and BANG - a new kindle has been released.... I hate technology....

Same - mine arrives tomorrow.

If I hadn't ordered a case and light from a different company, I would return the kindle and wait for the new one. I hate buyer's remorse - but the fact is that a new model of everything is inevitable. It's just a matter of timing.
 
I own the Kindle DX. No replacement for it yet. I prefer the DX over the standard still. Was worth every cent.

The Kindle forums had noted that the Kindle 2 was out-of-stock, so the rumours were flying ... still, I am very happy with mine, so no envy [as yet] :)

BTW, for those that haven't tried the program, it is worth downloading http://calibre-ebook.com/. It is an ebook library organiser with built-in format conversion & ebook viewer. Highly recommended.

Have I got news for you !!!

The Kindle DX has been replaced by a new release, this was a week or two ago - the new one is grey, and has a few improvements (50% better contast, etc).
 
Ipad isn't exactly a kindle replacement. It's not made for long term reading, in that sense it's not different from reading on a laptop. E-ink is a great technology.
Kindle alternatives are the cooler reader, sony daily reader, nook and others but kindle is far and away the best priced e-book reader available in SA. The wifi edition kindle with postage and import duties is under R1400 from amazon.

That's your own fault. There have been rumours for months that Amazon will be releasing a new kindle in August. I've been waiting for it and I will buy it!!

Question: In the article it says that Wantitall is waiting for local pricing...? Why? Why not just order straight from Amazon?
 
I am very interested in buying an ebook reader. Where do you guys get your books from?

Is the Kindle the best? Sony ones look nice and are a bit cheaper.

The cheapest - and probably fastest - method of obtaining a Kindle is to purchase direct from Amazon.com. When I purchased mine (December 2009) the price charged included airfreight / customs / VAT / etc. Three months later Amazon credited my credit card with about R300, saying that they had over-estimated on the delivery etc charges.

Sign up for the Amazon Kindle-related newsletters: there are always free books on offer. NB: there is normally a $2.00 processing fee. Since I already have most of the books by the mainstream authors I am using my Kindle to investigate low-priced 'unknowns': at $2.00 a pop its no great loss to dump a book after the first chapter. :)

Also sign up for a few of the Kindle / ebook forums: they are also a source of where to download free (or almost free) books.

NB: Technical books are (in general) only a couple of $$ cheaper than the printed copy. It's a rip-off, the only convenience being that you can carry with you every technical book / textbook that you have ever purchased ...

Purchasing a book via Amazon is a treat. Order the book and a few minutes later it auto-magically appears in your Kindle's table of contents.

Finally, you can load your Kindle with ebooks from other sources. One of the advantages of Calibre (the so-called ebook manager - see http://calibre-ebook.com/ is that it will automatically convert between ebook formats ...
 
Soooo can't wait for my new Kindle. Pre-ordered mine this morning :) Actually shipped it to Aus because I'm gonna be there when it launches. Up side is that there are no import duties on it there - schweeet!!!
Been using my Kindle 2 now for almost a year and have totally loved it!!! Now that it has actually paid for itself, it's time for me to upgrade and pass my old one on to my sister ;)
