On my 2004 A4 2.4 Multitronic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 85 000km's on the clock and the gearbox, according to Audi, cannot be repaired and must be replaced. Total cost R118k EXCLUDING labour!!!

I have a comprehensive after market maintenance plan with Motorite. Audi will contact them tomorrow and submit a claim...

I guess this will be the ultimate test of how comprehensive a plan this is....

Comments....

You know what they say: sucks to be you. I cant for the life of me figure out why replacement parts are so expensive. If you had to individually replace each part on any car you'll probably find it all adds up to twice what you paid for it  Anway, go ask some other places for a quote. Perhaps they are taking a chance with you

Audi Airport... 118 ducking k... Surely it's a legitimate quote. They will also have to vindicate/motivate the quote to Motorite to get the claim approved. Multitronic gearbox is a b itch!!!

Next time do a litte google before you think of buying a tiptronic gearbox :D
Guy I knew when I worked at MTN had to have his M3's gearbox replaced and I think it was about R 75k ? Also that DSG or what ever boxes.

I think Carte Blanche did a show about car parts in SA. If I remember correctly, building a CitiGolf from its parts bought at our dealers, the Golf would have cost R1.3 million o.0

OMG! That is about the most ridiculous price I have ever heard!! I really hope for your sake Motorite pays... otherwise I would try and strip the car for spares and try make some money back off it. Is it financed?

The worst I have heard previously was with 4x4 motors that cracked heads, the colt is around 35k to rebuild, a landy motor (can't recall which one) around 70k. The new Ford Rangers have a habit of destroying their gearboxes and the replacement cost is R47 000... Spoke to a guy I know who works at a dealership, they had one that destroyed 2 gearboxes within 20 000km.... luckily for whoever owned it the Ranger still had a warranty. But yea, parts of beyond ridiculous for almost any car in relation to what the vehicle costs.

Sorry for the OT, really hope your Motorite policy comes through for you. Let us know what they say.

The car is in mint condition. Considering it is 6 years old it is immaculate... except for the gearbox...:cry::cry::cry: Bought cash so thank f uck I don't have that hanging over my head...

Should have extended the freewayplan by a couple of years. It's pretty cheap if you just extend the years and they cover something like this without even blinking.
Audi don't offer anything beyond 5 years afaik. They suggested Motorite and I paid R28k to extend the warranty by 40 000kms and/or 36 months, whichever comes 1st...

Man that sucks! I always wanted an A4, I heard that you shouldn't buy one that was out of motorplan but would have never expected you could end up with such a nasty surprise. Also, 85000km really isn't much IMHO. 28k is also quite a large chunk of cash for an extra 40 000km so they better pay out... but if they do then it will really turn out to be money well spent I guess.

wtf? My mom's 2004/5 BMW 5 series gearbox went, and it cost us about R13k to replace (this was a steptronic gearbox btw, so just like yours), but the dealers wanted to charge us close to R30k for the thing... My dad just seemed to have a few guys in the business, and apparently, there's 1 guy in Gauteng that is able to change the gearboxes, the dealers don't do it but they send it to him... so maybe ask around, and I'll ask my dad to see whats up.

Why would the gearbox break?

Wish I knew. Had the cam belt changed about a month ago, 5000km earlier than scheduled as a precautionary measure. The Audi techie insisted this be done as a snapped cam belt would ruin the gearbox!!! The claim was approved by Motorite and the job was completed. The vehicle never quite felt the same since and now this!!!!!

Was on the highway on the way to the office this morning and suddenly I'm in neutral and revving madly then back in gear, then in neutral and revving madly, then in gear and cruising. I limped into the delearship and dropped her off for diagnosis... Seems she has terminal cancer...
