Thinking strongly about it - but at between R1,000-R1,500 ... Is it a really expensive car wash?

I did one once, not that expensive, and I guess not that thorough. Was about R600, washed the engine, and all the normal things... Wax, polish all that. Was worth it, car looked really good. It is something I want to do every second year.

... that sounds like a valet?

Detailing is that expensive, sadly :(

Depends on where you take it ... some guys will make your car look like it has 0km on it.

If you're in Cape Town, I can put you in touch with someone who can do it for under R1K, and he's got pics to prove it - in fact, he takes pics of most of his jobs.

Detailing is more than an expensive wash; it's about rehabilitating the paintwork and making it look like you drove it straight out of the showroom, or something near that.

R1500 seems a bit steep, then you do it yourself and 1500 is a bargain ;)

The products used can be pretty pricy. Even if they go a long way you need quite a number of different products for a full detail. Most detailers will have more than one of each type of product anyway. Plus if you're doing paint correction yourself then you're looking at at least R2500 for a "junior" DA or easily R4500 or so for the more professional DA/rotaries. Doing a full detail can easily take a whole weekend and it's back breaking stuff plus your hands get all yucky from the soaps/products/etc.

In most cases hopefully better than it was when you drove out the showroom. There's tons of scratches on cars "straight out of the showroom". (because they let the oke with a sponge, sunlight and a bucket wash it quickly so it's nice and shiny when you collect)
