Social network location sharing is a security threat

will not enable that feature... but yes... everybody who has access to my page pretty much already knows where I live.
 
The feature is not really to tell your 'friends' where you live - but to update them exactly where you are when you post your status update.

This is a feature which is cool (Image link to Google Maps Street View) - but on the other hand having some doggy 'friends' who could take the opportunity to break into your place when you update your status 'Having a great time!' and your are a long way from home and they know you would be hours away..

If I did decide to enable it, it is time to start securing my Twitter / FB accounts and remove friends who I don't trust which means could mean dropping the friends list from 500 to 50..

Sorry, maybe I'm too old, but I don't get it. Why on earth would you want to post your whereabouts online? It seems like such a security risk to me - for little to no benefit...
 
I strongly suggest you do this immediately! Facebook launched Facebook Places yesterday. Anyone can find out where you are when you are logged in. It gives the actual address & map location of where you are as you use Facebook. Make sure your kids know. TO UNDO: go to"Account", "Account Settings", ... "Notifications", then scroll down to "Places" and uncheck the 2 boxes. Make sure to SAVE changes!

You may also want to go to "Account" > "Privacy Settings" then look on the bottom left where it says "Applications and websites." Select "Edit your settings" and then edit settings for "Information available through your friends." Disable "Places I check in to."

Then...

1stly, fb doesn't "check-in" automatically when you login. To do this you have to go to touch.facebook.com. Or if you have an iPhone/Android phone, the newer fb app has that option.
2ndly, the steps I gave only stop you from getting notified if anyone tags you in a location with them or if anyone comments on your "check-in" status. It doesn't prevent them from actually doing it. To do this you need to go to Account > Privacy Settings. It's the 2nd last one on the list. You can set it to "Friends Only" ... or you can click customise and set it to "Me Only".

Uhm....

Those boxes only enable/disable notifications to your e-mail or whatever when someone manually tags you at a place, for instance a place where a picture was taken. :rolleyes:

Also, "Places is currently available on phones that support W3 geolocation." If you're sitting at home browsing on your PC you have nothing to worry about.

Um, you might want to see my edit. I think that pretty much covers all bases.

And I know it only applies to capable phones at this stage, but I am not about to leave my privacy settings unattended. FB is constantly pushing the envelope regarding privacy and anonymity... and I prefer to be on aware of things going on "under the hood".

I fail to see how this differs from a status update in which you state " Heading to Mozam for a week holiday... whoohooo"?
