I'd love to see how somebody with a 5.1 - 5.8GHz antenna is going to use it to connect on 5.9 - 6.2GHz.

It's a nice plan for WISPs who have nothing better to do with their time to con people out of giving them money for equipment they don't need.

There is no part of any .11 standard specifying use at 5.9 to 6.2 GHz. The only oddball one is .11y, which is at 3.6.

Actually, Atheros chipsets (one of the most common) support up to 6.4 GHz afaik. I haven't tested it though!

I also haven't tested the antennas, but I'd think the wavelength wouldn't be too different. e.g. if an antenna can handle anywhere between 5.1 and 5.8, It should cope just fine with 6.0 GHz.

Please do link us a datasheet or some whitepaper. Besides the obvious fact that there's no WiFi standard specifying operation at 5.9 - 6.2, I highly doubt they've opened spectrum for unlicensed use there.

Decent quality antennas are cut to a limited frequency range, typicaly 200Mhz in the 5GHz band. The 5.1 - 5.8GHz antennas that we can buy from Scoop and the likes don't perform nearly as well as the Poynting ones that are more frequency specific. I've had no end of hassle with link degradation over time on the "wide range" antennas. No doubt they may well work out of their frequency, but that's not how I was taught to work.

You don't understand what WAPA are trying to do.

They want the sole licence for that frequency range so that they can resell it to their members in 20MHz or 40MHz blocks.

Problem is the precident has already been set. I'm a member of the Land Rover Owners Club of Southern Africa. That club is affiliated with the Off Road Radio Association. ORRA have two nationwide VHF frequencies. If I go to ICASA and apply for a frequency so I can have a two way radio at my house or office and a radio in my 4x4, I have to jump through no end of hoops and have the patience of Job. Yet, if I show my LROC membership card to ORRA and pay them the R130 (or thereabouts) a year I immediately get my licence to use my radio in my 4x4.

Something similar is starting to happen in the WISP industry. Some of us are applying to ICASA for specific licenced frequencies outside of the ISM frequencies. We were recently allocated a frequency in the 5.4GHz band (outside of ISM band) to run a specific point to point WiMax backbone connection. I know there are others who either have specific licenced frequencies, or who are in the process of getting them. Now WAPA wants to get in on the act, buy all the spectrum that's left and resell it in small chunks.

I am not sure I understand what you mean here. If the current equipment that WISP's are using for their customers are not going to work properly in the frequencies applied for, then how is the customers going to not need other equipment ?

I understood that perfectly from the original post, what I don't understand is how they intend to use 5.9 - 6.2 with standard .11 hardware. There is no .11 hardware for that frequency range but the article claims that it's good for them since they can apparently use existing WiFi hardware.

They can't.

And that is the beauty of this con they are trying to pull.

They are going to have to sell their users new equipment. New equipment that they will be importing from the manufacturers and that the users won't be able to get "on the cheap" from the likes of Scoop and Miro.

And that's what I'm trying to point out, either the technical person who said those frequencies made a mistake (or just doesnt understand) or they're going to have hardware solutions made for them. If they focus on the latter, I provide consulting services XD.
