Digital TV still on target for 2011

Somebody should start a poll for ISBN vs DVB-t if it hasn't already been done.

Who cares?

Anyone that can afford Digital TV already has a satellite service.
Those that can't will be hard put to pay for the STB.

So essentially all they've done is delayed the announcement of the rollout delay...

Exactly....and then if they do decide to switch standards then that R500 mil that they spent on infrastructure for DVB what what is down the toilet never to be seen again! Idiots!

I have read that Brazil and Japan have been strongly lobbying for the ISDB standard which is delaying the digital migration in Africa (!?).
Considering the amount of money and time already invested in rolling out DVB-T in South Africa I think it would be silly to revert to another standard now.
I would be interested how far along theses other SADC countries are in developing their infrastructure for digital broadcasting....because DVB-T2 is already establishing itself so maybe they'll jump on that train soon.
Choose a standard and stick to it!

I vote for DVB-T

They are wasting so much money and terrestrial capacity while we have DVB-S services from Multichoice and Sentec.

Trash terrestrial all together and lets go satellite - its cheaper and perfect for the application, one way streaming of latency agnostic data.

Will the move to a digital system mean the scrapping of TV licenses?

I'm inclined to agree, to be honest. Free up all the terrestrial bandwidth for wireless data. It will mean that things like mobile TV will be impossible (DVB-H) - imagine walking around with a dish on your head :-)

But seriously, for the number of people who want to watch TV on the move, stream it via the data links.

Back on topic:

The prices for the proposed STB's were being bandied about at around R700-800, IIRC. If DSTV can get DVB-S dishes installed and connected up for R649, surely guavamint can subsidise it down to a similar level when you consider the volumes.

My reasoning exactly. Terrestrial should be used for latency sensitive two way communications - like data. If you really must you can stream video / audio on that data but South Africa has 15 years of investment in DVB-S already - use it!
The Vivid service from Sentech offers more than what the SABC plans to broadcast on DVD-T and you can get Vivid in a lot more places than you can get DVB-T.

I seriously hope DVB-T (and H) fails and that we will get everything from satellite.

M-net and E-tv are testing the only SECOND GENERATION standard in the World, which is DVB-T2, in Soweto! DVB-T2 is far better than isdb-t! But the main reason I think South Africa should stay with DVB-T/DVB-T2 is the fact that if it wasn´t for the Brazilian lobby and the corrupt DOC, we would have watched the World Cup via digital tv in our country! The mess in which we stand now was created by underground lobby deals between Brazil and the DOC! We were ready to go digital months before the World Cup, so that´s why more than ever, I wish isdb-t stays far from South Africa. The brazilian lobby and the DOC was a real CANCER for our digital tv transition!

I also thought the plan was to switch on digital before the World Cup, maybe they meant the next one??
