Apple's 2010 MacBook Air range: SA pricing revealed

lol those f'n prices...

If anyone wants to save money, order this from overseas and have it shipped. You will save more than a few thousand rands which could be used to pay these DSL payments or something for your kids/wife/mistress.

If you ship it from overseas all Apple products incur a 25% customs charge anyway. To be entirely honest I'm quite impressed with this pricing! It's far better than the US/SA ratio in the case of the iPhone which is almost 1:2.

On another note I'm seriously bleak that we in SA can't just order a beefed up spec Air with a 2.13Ghz CPU and 4Gb of RAM. When I asked the iStore employees about it they didn't seem to even know that there was a new air...I guess if they applied themselves they wouldn't be working in an iStore though.

Bull****. Apple products, just like all notebook computers are imported under customs tariff code 8471.30, and are therefore free of duty. If you paid customs on a computer, you did it wrong. VAT will be charged at an effective rate of 15.4%. THE END.
 
Prices are looking good--why? because the Rand is strong? or because they are rethinking their SA presence?

EDIT: Note the shop does not allow customization--like who lives with 2GB of RAM these days? And yah, they are not in stock, yet.

My cousin from the States is visiting over December. I may just ask her to pack one of these. Or maybe a Lenovo netbook instead.
 
these are reasonable prices indeed. i doubt you could get them much cheaper following official channels and paying all required VAT etc.
 
$999 x 7 = R6693

So that leaves you with only R2006 to pay for shipping, import duties, and whatever other expenses comes with it. I can't believe i'm gonna say this, but well done Core.

So true. I wanted to get 8Gb Ram for my MacBook Pro, and the faster processor. You think anyone at the iStore even knew that was possible?
 
They base model is priced relatively decently if you ask me...

But from there it gets a bit stupid...

11" 128GB is R2500 more expensive than the lower model.. but in the USA the price difference is less than R1500.
13" 128GB is R1500 more than the model below it... but the the USA the price difference is about R600

Its differences like that that irritate me intensely... decide on the exchange rate for the base model, then keep things consistent throughout the range

Computers/laptops don't draw customs duties, you are either mistaken or lying.

This is a huge PRICING FAIL. Compare to US *retail* prices (with intra-US shipping included in price!) (and Core Group don't buy at retail prices, keep in mind) - I've drawn up a quick spreadsheet:

1 SAPrice R 8 999.00 USRetailPrice: $999.00 = R 6 978.02 ; Difference: R 2 020.99 : Inflated by: 29.0 %
2 SAPrice R 11 499.00 USRetailPrice: $1 199.00 = R 8 375.02 ; Difference: R 3 123.99 : Inflated by: 37.3 %
3 SAPrice R 12 999.00 USRetailPrice: $1 299.00 = R 9 073.52 ; Difference: R 3 925.49 : Inflated by: 43.3 %

Option 3 is inflated at a whopping 43%, no jokes.

Price FAIL. You have to be a stupid sucker to buy at those margins.

The least inflated one is the 64GB one but you can't do much with 64GB these days; for that price you can buy a pretty good Windows laptop and run OS X in a VM.

This is why I always wonder, people...use THE INTERNET and order online! Not to mention the products from overseas actually seem to last longer as well. Believe me, order from overseas and have it delivered to your home.

Perhaps if enough of us did this, these scam artists would drop the prices! Paying R9,000 while the ish is worth R7,000. Lol, I don't feel like getting cheated! Here I come Amazon.com!
 
Here's a rough 'same price gets you, approximately' comparison in the PC world, for the first three options (option 4, well rest assured R15K will get you an excellent laptop):

1 ; 1.4GHz, 64GB, 11", 2GB RAM - Same price gets you: Acer TravelMate TM5730, 2.5GHz, 320GB, 4GB RAM
2 ; 1.4GHz, 128GB, 11", 2GB RAM - Same price gets you: TM8572G i5 2.4GHz, 500GB, 4GB RAM, 1GB VGA
3 ; 1.86GHz, 128GB, 13", 2GB RAM - Same price gets you: Tecra 2.66GHz, 320GB, 512MB VGA, 3G, 4GB RAM

Now yeah I know the Apple laptops are SSD, and have OS X. Apart from that, they seem like a terrible deal at the Core Group prices. I'd much rather have much bigger hard disks and much more RAM. Or buy a cheaper similar spec'd laptop and save the difference for my kids education.

I won't disagree. It's been a while since I last stood on the rocks with a Blacktail or Shad on the other end of the line. Doesn't mean you should be allowed to spread horror stories about customs duties to unsuspecting readers. I import when it's in my interests, everyone should do the same.
 
As much as I agree that you can buy alot more PC for the money...

There are not many PCs out there that are as thin as the Macbook Air.. which for me is a MASSIVE plus point.
 
Still, it' s hard to deny that the fit, finish, lower pricing, and overall performance of the new Airs makes them desirable and imminently usable laptops, and for many , that' s going to take the sting out of the Apple tax.
