SADC declares DVB-T2 as digital TV standard for Southern African region

Common sense prevailed. If only they asked me to peer review, it would've been over and done with months ago

This is the one ETV and MNET were fighting for, correct?

Yep DVB-T which is the first generation. SADC adopted DVB-T2 which in my understanding is not much difference but aint that sure, can someone confirm?

Once again, South Africa fails to show leadership...

so roll out can begin?

Not yet. This was an announcement made by SADC, not South Africa, or the DoC. Also, it is a recommendation, and not set in stone. Each country in the SADC region can still decide to take a different route.

I'm pretty sure we'll get an announcement from the DoC backing DVB-T2 pretty soon.

There are probably gonna be some very unhappy people and politicians, who's pockets would have been greased by the Brazillians and Japanese if the ISDB-T route was followed.

it makes it more difficult for SA to go with ISDB-T but it doesn't set us on a DVB-T2 course. In all likeliness SA will simply idle for a few years. Hopefully though the continuation of terrestrial TV broadcasting will be reviewed.

Very unhappy haha, they should sue for loss of earnings haha

DVB-T2 is the right decision!

I don't think the guys with the big bottomless pockets knew about the 2006 Geneva Agreement:

"Any SADC Member State that decided to adopt any other standard than DVB-T2 with MPEG4 compression should do so in compliance with GE-06 [Geneva ITU GE06] Agreement.”

There was no SABC typo. The references to SADC are all correct.

Actually, I'm tending to agree with Rouxenator that DVB-S or DVB-S2 would be a FAR better solution long term.

Free up the terrestrial frequencies for bi-directional data, use satellite for one way latency insensitive broadcasting.

Sure, it would mean that households would require a dish but consider how much money guavamint was proposing to spend on subsidising set top boxen for the poor, and it's not too unreasonable.

The SABC is already broadcasting SABC1 and SABC2 (Complete with electronic program guides), SABC3 and SABC International in digital using DVB-T, and there are a number of different radio stations, also complete with their electronic program guides being broadcast. ETV is also broadcasting using digital. Since they've already started broadcasting it would be a costly and downright stupid exercise to switch standards.
