I have a Netgear DG834GT router.

Out of nowhere an annoying problem has popped up. We cannot receive calls on our landline. The phone rings once and then the caller just hears cracking.
We can make calls fine though.

I just bought a new ADSL line filter, because I assumed the other one died. I was wrong, that didn't solve the problem.

As soon as I disconnect the router from the phone line the problem goes away.
However the router seems to work fine, I'm using it to access the internet right now.

Had to get this stupid Netgear router replaced twice, the first two I had died. Warranty is long over now, will not be happy if I have to replace this one as well over such a stupid problem.
Help me :(

Edit:
After searching I found someone with the same problem but there isn't a solution there:

You might have to get a high-pass filter for the ADSL modem and a low-pass filter for the telephone.

I'm not sure if you can just buy a high-pass filter for the ADSL modem off the rack.
AFAIK the ADSL splitter filter that you get from telkom has only a low-pass filter for the telephone and simply patches the ADSL modem connection through directly.

But why would I only need that now after this way has been working fine until yesterday? I tried plugging both the phone and the router into the filter I got today since it had slots for both, that made no difference. I don't know if it's a high pass filter.

Could my router be faulty?

Try placing a normal un-powered un-fancy phone on the line before the filter.
You don't actually use this phone, in fact, if it solves the problem, remove the ringer speaker and pretend that it does not exist.
