How to trick the Apple App Store

... without a US iTunes voucher

For my iPhone I created a US iTunes account and I buy gift certificates.

US Address: http://www.fakenamegenerator.com (Florida does not charge sales tax in iTunes)
iTunes Gift Certificate: http://www.mediawob.com (can take a day or two; you pay with a SA credit card via PayPal)

Does the Kenya store have everything in the US store? If so then that would be cheaper as Mediawob charges $32 for a $25 gift certificate.

Dont you need a social security number to do that? Can you provide some details as to how (and with which bank) you managed to do it?

What about all those terms & conditions thatget updated every now & again....no one has the time to read it but i thought i saw something that make this process "illegal"?

My wife uses my American Express credit card for her Audible books that she downloads from the USA. I presume that should be no problems here too?

Wow, openly toughtin credit card fraud...even if it is with your own card.

Nope. Giving true info to mediawob and paypal. Only fake thing is US address for iTunes. Gift certificates were physically purchased in the US by mediawob. So seems pretty legit to me.

As far as I can see they look pretty similar. All the big titles are there, Angry Birds, Flight Control, the Penny Arcade stuff. Also I think you are not paying sales tax which you would be if you were using a US credit card which was registered in a state with sales tax.

Now I understand why this is the case for music and other media which are tied down by arcane licensing agreements, but for applications there is no logical reason that you shouldn’t be able to pay with any credit card on any store.

I think you meant: "archaic"... :)

Still, the same applies to apps. Every app has to be registered with the South African Film and Publications Board before being allowed to be sold here. Stupid and archaic in a digital age where borders have no real significance, I know, but there it is. Hence, no XBOX Live content, no Android Marketplace and no iTunes/Mac Store.

I spit on you, SA FPB.

As much as I understand Apple's "motivation" in not having games etc. available in the local store, I also don't understand why people would buy a Mac, iPad or iPhone knowing very well that they either have to "trick" the store or have to go the "illegal" route if they want something not available locally. It is not as if Apple changed it's mind after the fact! I don't condone Apple's pricing strategy in SA - it is ridiculous to put it mildly. I will NEVER buy an Apple product locally - it is madness!

Totally agree with not buying Apple products in SA, I've had 5 different iPods over the years and never bought a single one in SA. The only thing I ever bought for my iPod in SA was a screen protector.

Etrade bank.

you open an etrade securities account. While the patriot act does not allow non US residents to open a bank account they still do want investments. When you open up a securities account, which is used for trading (although you do not have to do any trades) the account functions as a normal bank account. I got my dollar checkbook and a visa debit card which is what I registered with itunes to pay for my purchases.

You don't need a soscial security number to do it.

Is this legal in SA? Not very clued up on the law...so just wondering.

Hmmm, I've had my account for 5 years now and no problems. As long as SARS knows about the account you won't encounter any legal problems. I opened my account because I am an internet marketer and I needed a fully functional paypal account (pre-fnb paypal), so people could buy my products via paypal as well. In order for me to open up a paypal account as a US citizen I had to have a US bank account.

Really sad that honest people are forced to get into these 007 stuff to get what they deserve. It's not like we get iPhones and Mac's locally at discounted prices because we can't do everything the device was designed to do ... nope, we actually pay much more to get much less. We're supposed to be the most advanced country in Africa, but Kenia and Namibia beats us when it comes to access to Apple products and services.
