More new and cheap virtual hosting services unveiled

Gamco’s dedicated cloud server pricing starts at R499 per month for an entry level product (1 CPU, 512 KB RAM, 20GB storage and 5GB traffic)

Pffft. Bill needs 640 KB :)

Cloud Computing... you doing it wrong.

This is not cloud computing, its VPS hosting.

Cloud Computing is a disposible resource billed on usage and not a set system.

Then I still fail to understand why if you are going to pay R1999 per/month, why you would want to spend it on a VPS instead of a dedicated server?

Did someone say cloud computing? I AM LITERALLY SALIVATING AT THE MOUTH EVEN THOUGH I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS. I NEED IT!

Waste of money, rather get yourself a dedicated server, it's way more cheaper and very good hardware specs.

i presume these services are on the local network?
it would help to know, as a lot of cloud and vps gets sold and resold from uk & usa.
wouldn't want to confuse the two...

this.

I moved one of my servers from a VPS at Afri-fail to a physical server at Hetzner. It came with 3 IP's so I installed kvm and now I'm selling a VPS to one of my clients while still having awesome performance on my own site. Woot!!!

One of the (many) reasons I left AH was that some one else's VPS on the same box as mine would have random load problems and absolutely murder the performance of my server. A VPS can be great for some things but it can be an absolute nightmare if the ISP doesn't know how to balance the all the virtual servers correctly.

I assume so, yes. The VPS market in south africa is pretty bad due to the high pricing, so people are trying to penetrate the market by using blabble and "buzzwords" to sell their products that nobody actually wants or needs.

Case in point: It's been mentioned a few times already in this thread that at the high end a dedicated machine is actually cheaper and more effective that the highest "cloud vps".

There's no market for cloud based computing in South Africa yet - people don't understand what it's used for and companies end up selling something that's got nothing to do with it at all.

To afrihost/gamco: Go read up on what grid computing means and the difference between it and cloud computing.

I would much rather use Slicehost, Linode or Amazon's EC2 amongst others and yes, calling it Cloud Hosting is quite a laugh.

I love how many people have negative comments about new technologies and the companies offering them. If they are so knowledgeable, why are they not in the industry offering the technologies. All companies that are willing to and are pushing forward, well done to them. For all you nay-sayers, put up or push off.

BTW, has anybody checked out Afrihost's new order form for the cloud and dedicated offerings. It is definitely the best order form currently out there. And if their dedicated service is anything like the ADSL service, we are all in for a huge treat! Afrihost FTW!

LOL.

Still think Hetzner's R895 dedicated server is better value for money. You get Core i5, 4GM RAM and 500GB storage.

And then you get Mweb's R683 p/m local dedicated with 4 cores Xeon X3430, 4GB Ram, 2 x 500GB drives (1TB or 500GB Raid) and 50GB Traffic. Cant compare.
