Hey all,

I need some help. My Line is a 384kb with 30GB data from BTWeb (same as Afrihost data source) and the Mega 105WR router (quite a few years old).

Unfortunately a few weeks ago my line was assaulted by the outages and started disconnecting every 5 minutes. I filed 2 reports and it was fixed after about 10 days... good enough I suppose.

However now my ping times are horrendous during the day. I want to get a Telkom chap out here but if it turns out to be my fault (poor telephone cables indoors etc.) then I pay R200 callout charge.

I borrowed someone else's router to make sure, so here are my 100 average ping tests:

1. With newer router and Telkom ADSL account: 84ms to telkom.co.za
2. With newer router and BTWeb ADSL account: 103ms to telkom.co.za
3. With old router and BTWeb ADSL account: 144ms to telkom.co.za (175ms to JHB COD4 servers)

My problem is what do I tackle first? I phoned BTWeb to file a report, but should I buy a new router anyway? Also, the ping should technically be about 50ms to telkom.co.za with the newer router and Telkom account (1) - should I get them to send out a techie?

I'm based in CT.

Thanks

Jack

EDIT: just to say, I have been waiting to upgrade to 4MB, but I'm worried it will be too poor. My attenuation rates are well above the amount required ATM, so why such bad ping?
