Sentech plans combination of WiMAX and LTE network

Who will end up paying for the capital if the plan is to work on a no capital recovery model.... again the tax payers.... we get shafted every time.

So if they are not going to enter the retail market who will be offering the WiMAX and LTE services?

They might as-well just sell of the spectrum to the mobile service providers.

So they only have a 50MHz channel? This may work for rural scenarios, but it seems insufficient for larger towns and cities.

It's probably not enough for a fully-fledged cellular network (SA's MNOs have spectrum in 900, 1700/1800, and 1900/2100 in pairs of 10, 11 and 12 MHz blocks), but make no mistake, 50 MHz is a good chunk of frequency.

How will the poor access these networks when they can barely afford food and clothing?

Never mind PC's and the like.

Why target rural areas? Because Sentech can't handle the demand/cope with urban users. The only reason they're doing this is to spite others who has better use for the spectrum.

50MHz is quite substantial and will easily be enough, especially if you don't attempt very high speed networks. Look what IBurst did with just 15MHz and they really just scratched the surface.

I didn't consider the low speed scenario. I've worked with WiMax in the past (granted not as an engineer) and the company I was working for ran into major congestion issues with 50. But those were high speed connections in dense urban areas.

that chunk of 50Mhz is probably the most valuable piece of spectrum in SA at the moment....
