HP ProLiant MicroServer

What has the GPU got to do with storage?

The GPU for graphics / sound question has been answered (numerous times?) and as the poster was not specific about his question, the statistical chance is there that it is a new question (confused one YES!) about the storage link in the question...

oooh never mind, that went over so high, it did not even make a sound on ground level ...

Best GPU for graphics has been covered in the tread. Think it is a toss-up between two nVidia's?
Best GPU for storage... THAT is a new question!

New question: will either the 220 or 520 be able to do Seti@home crunching?

Will take a look thanks!

Exactly.

Read the last few pages, it's been about GPUs fairly consistently.

Thanks will check.

Also i see the memory needs to be DDR3 1333Mhz (800Mhz) ECC Memory.

Anyone know who sells this memory at a decent price. Also would it be a waste to just at 1GB Memory or should i rather buy 2 x 2GB Memory modules.

The trick is to get high after posting

It uses non-ECC memory as well. Memory's cheap these days and the prices are similar across the board. As for how much RAM to get, that depends on your uses. Odds are you won't need more than one or two gigabytes of the stuff.

Do a bit of reading from the start of the thread. Most of your queries have been handled ad nauseam or can be answered with a quick google.

No extra ram, however I'm watching though VLC, having a sound issue with XBMC.

Interesting - WHS2011 wouldn't install without 2GB... hopefully I can get away without installing extra ram in my next build.

Is the fan noise loud on the gt520. I would prefer the 6650 because its passive but i'm worried about the whole linux and ati issue, especially around the hardware acceleration.

I have an MSI GT520 and the fan is no louder than the fan built into the microserver.

Where can I get WHS 2011?

I got it at work - think from a MSDN pack - but didn't use the key, I was only running it in 'trial' mode to see if it would work- it did, but didn't play nice with Microsoft MCE remote, so installed Windows 7

There seems to be some conflict as to whether or not the Sapphire 6450 GddR3 actually comes with the low profile bracket. Can someone confirm this? Someone with first hand experience that is.

Also suggestions for a supplier - pref - cape town.

It definitely does.

Both in stock.

Hi,

I ordered a HP Microserver this morning it it looks like the ideal solution for me.

I just need to clarify 1 more thing please and I have been reading through the HP Microserver thread as well

I will set-up as follows:

- Windows 7 Pro 64bit
- 4GB memory
- Microserver connected to my WiFi router via ethernet
- PS3 connected to the same router via ethernet as well
- Stream to my iPad 2 / iPhone 4 via WiFi using Air Video server for Windows
- Stream to my PS3 via ethernet and watch via the PS3 / HDMI connection to my LCD using PS3Media server or XMBC

with this config above I am assuming I don't need a dedicated graphics card like a Sapphire 5450 I have been reading about as I am not pushing out any video directly from the server but what about the coding required for the media server to the PS3?

Most of the video is .avi (1.5gb - 3gb) as it plays fine through the PS3 currently

Thanks again

Can one install a normal additional PCI network adaptor in one of these

The only thing to consider is PS3 Media Server having to transcode some files. The Microserver does not have a very powerful CPU and will battle with transcoding.

I have played with PS3 Media server installed on WHS 2011, and the Microserver did surprisingly well, managed 4GB MKV’s and bellow, but bigger files failed.

If you keep with the 1.5-3GB files you should be fine.
