that it's stamped at the BACK

or it doesn't count!

ie. they will NOT count it towards your party that you vote for

This was discussed on 702 on Friday.

It is not really the voters responsibility to have to do this, but it won't hurt to check.
There are party officials on the voting station who are watching to check that each ballot is stamped correctly.
But if you are paying attention you will notice them flip over the corner and stamp it for you.

This is not new by the way, it has been this way for the last 2 elections.
The reason for this little stamp is so that the ballot is verified as legitimate right before you make your vote.
It prevents someone from suddenly arriving with a bunch of ballots already filled out.

Anybody know what this stamp is/states?

It's a tiny little round stamp. Probably says something like "verified" or "genuine".

They interviewed the guy who makes the stamps and he says he was approached before the last elections to make a bunch of extra stamps on the side for a third party.
He told them to get stuffed, but never reported it to the IEC.

Voting Day (18th May 2011) – VITAL INFORMATION

I received this in an e-mail from someone in my complex.

Haven't the time now to see on the forum if this / something similar has been posted in one of the threads, so just so you & others you know who are voting, are all aware :

Please tell all [your friends] to DOUBLE CHECK their voting paper is STAMPED at the back otherwise their vote does not count.

I counted at the last election and ALL votes with no stamp of the local polling station were not counted.

That is the very first item on the list that we check and the votes without stamps at the back are discounted immediately.

they probably upped the price this time around and hes probably pumping those stamps out faster than you can imagine

:)

One of the ladies from the DA said it has caused a few problems as the IEC officials went to a few old age homes to get the people there to vote, but they forgot to take the stamps with them, so when the ballots were brought into the counting center, they just chucked the whole lot into the bin.

And it is nothing new... it has been that way for the last two elections.
It probably won't hurt for you to check, although if you are paying attention it is kind of obvious that someone is taking your ballot paper flipping it over and stamping it on the back corner.
There are party officials in the voting stations there to check that the correct process is followed.

Thanks for the info so far.

Should officials stamp the ballot in ones presence or are pre-stamped ballots acceptable?

well, I would be happier if they did it inside the voting station, as you have no idea where the pre-stamped ones came from.
I would imagine that the party officials would step in and cause a ruckus if the procedure was not followed inside the voting station.

That's what I was thinking and anything IS possible - good to know the proper procedures and be adequately 'armed' in event of irregularities.
Time to visit the IEC site, see what info (if any) is available.
Or perhaps now is a good time to contact the political parties and compare info provided!

This is the ANC, corruption runs deep. Throwing away votes, claiming they are not stamped will more than likely happen.

I just hope no dead people vote this time.

So ja, no clarity as to when stamping occurs.

Well, as I say, I remember from the two previous elections that they were stamped in my presence right as the papers were handed to me. So I have no reason to assume that the procedure will be any different this time.

on 702 on Friday, the one lady (can't remember if she was an IEC lady or from a party) said that they threw away thousands of ballots that were not stamped.

Could they(iec) be corrupt? Is that possible?

Sure it is possible. The IEC is only made up out of volunteers who have taken an oath of impartiality. But it figures that proportionally speaking there must be more volunteers from the party which commands the largest following in SA. No prize for figuring out who that is.

LOL

Thank you for the info, very interesting. So the vast majority of the IEC could be ANC paid people who are counting our votes.

Well that is not worrying at all
