10 Mbps Fibre versus 10 Mbps ADSL pricing

You also have to work in the price of the actual property, considering that is a requirement...

How can Telkom 10Mbps with 5GB data be R695 while Do3 with 9GB is R687? Is this an error?

Do3 is R554 add the Line rental of R133 and you end up with R687, I believe the data on the package is discounted.

One thing I notice, is that you don't seem to have options of where to buy your GB's from, once they have lured you as a client with the low fiber access fee. That means they can rob you blind with usage charges.

Or am I missing something?

Sounds about right. With ADSL you have options, and that alone is even worth having a lower speed.

So... erm... is no one going to mention the obvious? The fact that 10MB Line speed is useless with a 1GB Cap? I mean seriously... That's like getting a Ferrari but you are only allowed to drive 10 km a month with it.

Nope, not going to mention it cos they weren't just comparing 1Gb.
Why though, was 9Gb Do 3 compared to 11Gb fibre? Why not compare apples with apples. Also, the Do3 had analog phone included (like it or not).

Unfortunately, after lookin at this, I still prefer Helkom, cos u can chop and change ADSL bandwidth providers. Also u get "free" voice minutes on the packages.

This is definitely not worth it.

I say, "Better the devil u know, than the Devil u Don't"

Lol...

Are Telkom and ATEC in competition at that estate? If it is a new estate is there any Telkom infrastucture already, or will the policy be that if someone installs fibre Telkom packs up and walks away?

The developer provides the infrastructure exclusively for ATEC, so they will not allow Telkom any access to that estate.

Better make that 10km count then :) Hopefully the highway is just around the corner, or you stay in Houtbay to do a bit of the mountain pass

For R376 I will take the 10Mbps fibre with 4GB bandwidth in a heartbeat, as long as it is not more than a 12 month contract with month to month there after, and throw away Telkom. I'll give Telkom credit, there ADSL seem to be very reliable with 1 day downtime in a year. But given FTTH I will support them fully to allow the service to get ground and provide sustainable world-class bandwidth for the average user.

I would prefer though that the infrastructure be a leased system where other competitors will be able to use the same infrastructure in the future to keep competition up.

No. You need a fixed abode for Telkom too.
It would be interesting to know the cost of the last mile infrastructure and how it was paid for.
If (when) a new provider is needed, how do they provide service?

The developer provides the pipes and ducts while he is doing the civil works in the initial phases of the estate. The cost of this is factored into the cost of the erf that you purchase in the estate. Hence they will not allow any other providers access to those pipes and ducts.

The other model (in established estates) is that each home owner pays between R15-20k for the initial installation, and a certain threshold of users is required to achieve economy of scale (around 300?).

Wow. It's rather 3 month downtime a year. According to my calculations, taken from sample company, in 50% of cases, every month any signal disappears (ie. dead) on random basis and it takes 1,5 work weeks (ie. roughly 14 days with weekends) to fix. Calculation: 14*6= 84 days (ie. about 3 months at least with some overhead). Reasons for such downtime, that Telkom technicians do something wrong at distribution boxes, so lines get disconnected upon every intervention from them.

Fibre is much more reliable than that.

No error - Do3 is a bundled price - no such product exist for the other two offerings.

That is a big problem I think. We have been in a situation where Telkom was not allowed easy access to provide services, and it basically resulted in very poor service delivery from the resident estate telco. Competition is key to boost service levels.
