Broadband speeds in South Africa

Download Speed: 3347 kbps (418.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 426 kbps (53.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

Latency: 37 ms

Telkom infrastructure out of capacity

Line 4Mbps ADSL - Down 0.69Mbps, Up 0.42Mbps, Ping 78ms
Problem: Telkom infrastructure DSLAM/Exchange in Rosettenville out of capacity.

Line Margin/Attenuation OK
Does not matter which ISP used.
Does not matter which modem used.

Speed is usually faster in the mornings (upto 3.6Mbps) and slows to 0.2Mbps in the evening.

There are a number of people with 011-435/011-436 reporting the same problem, but to date no upgrades have been done.

Any ideas on how to get Telkom to prioritise an upgrade to the infrastructure at the Rosettenville exchange?

Many of those speeds are unsustainable. What I mean with that is there is no way they will give you that kind of performance if you push a 100GB over them. You simply cannot afford to.

I wonder how many people change ADSL ISP's only to discover the problem is with Telkom.

Suggest you
Good luck - may the force be with you

I respect the summary of the results, but I don't believe that these results are a true reflection of how the network behaves.
I believe these speed tests are designed for personal use and not overall network quality.
If individuals use this as an indication of the network quality and speed they should also know that these results can be manipulated.
Eg
To sabotage a specific networks results all I have to do is go to an area where is minimal coverage and the run a few (hundred, thousand) tests and the results will become inaccurate. Or run the test on an inferior modem, etc.
Similarly, if I wanted to get great results, I will sit in the best possible position to get the greatest coverage and run a few tests

If the results are gathered from indivdual IP adresses, that can also be manipulated. eg. Hurtlocker lawsuit.
Just my two cents
If anyone can prove me wrong, it would be appreciated.

I'm hoping http://speedtest.mybroadband.co.za/ will be more accurate
