so after reading this

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...ailability-and-Speed-Checker-web-page-updated

i happily went to check, like I have been on an almost monthly basis.

https://secureapp.telkom.co.za/checkadsl/checkADSL.htm

entered my phone number, as per normal except this time I was greeted with a pleasant message :)

ADSL Support : Your exchange support ADSL

Max speed supported by your exchange: 10240

off I go to openweb,

"1 x 10mbps uncapped afterhours please"

paid my R899 thanks very much all sorted.

Just called telkom

"sorry but your exchange doesnt support 10mbps"

so dont waste your time with that URL that checks, unless you'd like to pour R899 down the drain like I just did

awesome start to the weekend lol

telkom you owe me R899, idiots!!

yeah most exchanges is being upgraded to 10mb atm, but website should of wait to say that does support 10mbs, though you probably get in week or 2.

this is how i knew i got 10mb.

i was surfing net about 5.45pm one day and boom she went down, and 5min after my router resync at 4095(not 4096) and 503(not 512).

so after few days the website was updated and show i could get a 10mb.

i phoned them , sir you can get 6mb , so i took that.

The person you spoke to probably just didn't know it's been upgraded yet. It might also only go live for upgrade in a few days.

And agree that you should know to check your line with Telkom "properly" before buying an ISP package. The status checker is accurate almost all of the time.

Apparently they have upgraded quite a few exchanges on a trial basis to determine if the amount of traffic is managable with only a few people being upgraded to 10mb. They are focused on the 512 -> 1mb upgraded at the moment. The lady I spoke to said my exchange was on a trial upgrade and that my line would upgrade automatically when the upgrade becomes available.

Keep phoning till you get someone that isn't retarded, you're exchange has probably been upgraded to 10Mbps, but you haven't been moved to the new ADSL2+ equipment so you won't get 10Mbps until they do that. Also you cannot request them to do it as they can't log a call for it.

i agree, why would you take out a 10mb after hours account without upgrading the line first?

no offence, but really bad move to order a 10Mbps ISP account BEFORE actually witnessing that your line is physically capable of it

does anyone know if the upper highway in durbs will be upgraded?
I've been asking the lady at hillcrest shop since last year, she keeps telling me its still being tested.

not that makes a difference, but there was also a call placed to my father to Telkom help desk regarding out line. They said 10mbps was all good

one of the reasons I also went ahead to openweb. so it wasnt just the URL that I checked...

but anyway... :(

Other than using that URL to check the maximum speed of the exchange/DSLAM, you'd have to ensure that your SNR margins are high enough to change from 4Mbps to 10Mbps.

I do have to agree with you that Telkom's website really sux. Like yesterday I tried to activate my friend's ADSL, but he didn't have the order number so we were stuck :(

It might be quicker to wait for them to upgrade the actual line to 10Mbps :D

UPDATE :

my exchange has been upgraded to 10mbps. I have confirmed this with a supervisor from the technical side of Telkom.

Basically, my line is not yet on one of the 10mbps "cards" and needs to be moved over. We have the details of the manager of the actual exchange where our line goes to, and hopefully he will be able to move us across asap.

lots of very confused people in telkom not knowing what the other arm/leg is doing.

will post later

It does say MAX speed, and it is "supported". Just because it's supported doesn't mean it has to deliver. :P

After all, Telkom can support cheaper prices, LLU and (dare I say?) uncapped, but they don't deliver.

Anyway I went to check mine:
ADSL Support : Your exchange support ADSL alimenty
You don't say... :erm:

Telkom, your grammar support bad.
