Telkom ADSL growth continues: June 2011

A few quick sums show that telkom is raking in over R1.1 billion rand annually in voice line rental from these adsl subscribers without taking into account the revenue from the adsl line rental - no wonder why they don't want to do away with it and just offer adsl on its own.

When is LLU coming to normalize the market?

LLU is not the holy grail. We cannot ignore the higher than normal theft rate of infrastructure in this country which makes costs disproportionate. The cost of the rental/purchase/leasing of the last mile to an operator needs to be less than a hundred bucks a month per subscriber to make a business case.

the figures are pathetic even more pathetic when you realise that South Africa is a developing country

that may be true, but telkom doesnt even look after their own infrastructure. Just read up on the security company scandals they had a while ago. I doubt things have changed recently. More players should be involved.

Telkom is to South African Subscribers on a National level what hijackers are to motorists on a roadside level.

How about a table with cellular/wireless data subscribers over the same period.
All three mobile operators are also running promotions offering subscribers a modem and 2GB of data for R149 per month – significantly less than an entry-level 384Kbps ADSL service which typically costs over R300 per month when all costs are taken into account.

For 80% of the home market, ADSL is best replaced with Cellular.
Cell is faster, cheaper, has more coverage.

ADSL only makes sense for
  • uncapped / high data usage
  • gaming (Low latency)

[-]Telkom need wake up and offer a more competitive service/product[/-]
Fiexed that, Telkom needs to just die.

The table would show that Telkom have missed a huge opportunity.

Do these figures reflect ALL ADSL lines, including wholesale ADSL lines re-sold by other ISPs like MWEB and WebAfrica as all-in-one (line + data) packages? Or are these just the ones being sold directly by Telkom?

Competition is the only tool that will ensure the sub-100 bucks pm line rentals or even free as the other operators will ensure better management of their last mile infrastructure than what the incumbent is currently doing.

Yep I would also like to see the competition's figures (growth into the market) rather than Telkom  trying to blow its own horn.

It is such a pity the Neotel was a telkom 2.0 otherwise we may already have had decent pricing and service from our line providers

One word : Uncapped

Once Mobile networks figure that out then ADSL will be in trouble. I'm not talking uncapped 21mbps here, uncapped 512kbps and 1mbps on mobile will already cause a serious headache for fixed line providers.

I'm quite surprised by the numbers. I thought there would be a lot more subscribers. Are the numbers inclusive of residential and business users?

South Africans are awakening to the business benefits and personal lifestyle benefits of broadband. I firmly believe we can use whatever we are offered as long as it is at the right price and at the right quality... :)

Not until Telkom gets competition !
