2.7m South African cellphone users face return to ‘stone age’

I think that the president should call for a public holiday tomorrow so that all those who have not RICA’d can have an opportunity to do so. And a free braai pack please?:)
 
eish how am I going to get hold of Julius on friday, or wait I can see him saying next week "I didnt know about rica"
 
We're already in the stone age. I mean we still don't have uncapped data plans. Hell, we don't even have any proper contracts with data apart from Red Bull Mobile.
 
Just wondering where that 2.7 million comes from. Is it all sim cards which are currently active or sim cards which where active at some point?

Blah, you couldn't even check with Vodacom even if you wanted to they whole system is down. Just tried to see if that number given works...something to add to this thread

You know what the sad thing is?

A sim card can easily be RICAd with fake information, and I am very sure that there are thousands if not more sims out there that have been RICAd with fake info.

So now that everybody is RICAd, SPs still don't know if the info was ever correct. And as time passed it has gotten easier. They don't even want a real ID anymore, you can take a uncertified copy and they accept it. I wonder if Service Providers have ever heard of a piece of software called photoshop?
 
As I understand it, any GSM dependent device which uses a sim card to operate, needs to be RICA'd. So what about stolen vehicle recovery devices (such as those fitted by Tracker, Pinpoint, Matrix and others) and some burglar alarm systems and prepaid electricity systems (heard today that these also have sim cards :wtf:)? Tracker has advised their sim card are sorted. What about the others?
 
Bapela said that MTN had problems with subscribers believing that the deadline was a farce and that it was going to be extended. Cell C had trouble in educating its subscribers on the reasons for RICA-ing and the documentation required to complete the process, such as ID documents and proof of residence.

Really? People who fall into these categories should not be allowed to have a cell phone. Luckily they may soon be without cell phone facilities at least.
 
Probably the majority of these SIM cards are "dead" cards, foisted on people buying new devices to replace stolen or lost devices, so that the various service providers can boost their claims of connected clients ... , wonder which one is going to loose the most "connected" SIM cards ... , not that it really matters ...
 
most subscribers are automatically rica'd, sure they are going to cut off 2mil people off paying say R400 a month ?
 
This is not going to end well!

My wife had to do a sim swap about a year ago at an MTN store (her phone was stolen). She had to bring the rica documents to do the swap.
Yet she still receives the sms messages saying she needs to rica or get cut off.

So I wonder how many rica'd phones are going to get cut off because of service provider incompetence.
