e.tv plans to launch digital TV channel in 2012

However, Vass said that the following still needs to be completed before they would be able to give an accurate timeline for launch:

Set top box (STB, a device needed to receive a digital TV signal) standards still need to be agreed on and approved by all role-players in the SABS process.
A government project management office still needs to be established so that central co-ordination for the project is provided.
A government conformance scheme is to be established so that set-top-boxes can be tested.
Broadcasters must still apply for digital terrestrial television (DTT) channel authorization, which ICASA (the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa) must approve.
ICASA needs to announce the performance period so that broadcasters can begin the broadcasting of DTT channels.

Jeewizz. Asking government and/or ICASA to do all of the above before holographic TV is launched, is like asking Juliaaaaass to build a wooden table from scratch.

Eishhhhhhhhhh!

I may be mistaken, didn't !casa award a license to etv, and opted not to compete with MonoChoice? What is it they have up their sleeve, I wonder. Right now they're as slippery as Vaseline:erm:

Satellite

I wonder if the new DTT channels by e.tv (and SABC when eventually launched) will be included on DSTV and TopTV's satellite platforms?

Would be cool to have some extra channels on either satellite platform.

The license was for Pay-TV, using existing technologies and radio frequencies. DTT will operate in different frequencies to normal analogue, and make use of different technology (digital).

Shame e-TV waiting and relying way too much on gov to come to the party.
/me thinks they should postpone their plans indefinitely and only make these bold announcements once gov has actually done their bit...less chance of dropping the ball that way.

Oh joy! Finally... Now you won't just get annoyed with ads DURING movies, you'll have an opportunity to pay for them as well...
