Hi All
So i applied for the Galaxy S (145pm all incl and no pay-in) with Cell c.
They were quick, approved everything, tested the phone...
Signed of everything, was excited.
Then he gives me the last form which is the warranty.

It states: The phone can only be used with a Cell C sim card, otherwise the warranty will be void.
Guy tells me they will know what sim was used...
I already inserted my MTN sim into it (using the cell c for off peak at home).

Now i think this is ridiculous. Warranty is with Manufacturer, not SP.
Also with MNP, the idea was that no SP can trap a client using these methods.

So i did some digging and found an article dated 2007

Does this still hold. Could i complain to icasa.
BTW, as mentioned i did sign the form.
Do i have the option that i ca return everything within 7 days even if box is opened and phone used.

Mtn also has this clause, but they fixed my bb two times already. I dont think they really check.

send from my Darky powered SGS Android phone

I guess with the CPA you should be able to return it. Funny that mobile companies are so keen to shoot themselves in the foot with such customer hostile policies. I was completely unaware of this and have used a 8ta sim in mine while they were sorting out the mess they made of my contract... If they held this against me there is no way I would ever be a customer of theirs again.

With Vodacom SP, if a Vodacom sim is not used in a Vodacom phone for 90 consecutive days then the warranty is pended and we can no longer book the phone in on our repair system under the warranty.

I am with vodacom (as you know).

Just a question regarding this. I plug people at work's sims into my phone on average about once to twice a month (putting databundles and stuff on them). Would this void my warranty? (if I actually cared about my cheap phones warranty).

Thanks for the replies.
OC, could i not take it straight to the manufacturer.
As per the article i provided, could i complain to icasa.

P.S. Andriod is awesome, i dont want to return the phone.

yebo as it breaks your 90 day cycle everytime which is kinda stoopid but they wanna cover their asses when they don't know how to fix a fault on their side easy thing to do is void the warranty or blame your phone
which is becoming a common thing with vodacom these days

Nah...you dont have anything to worry about. The main thing here is people that maybe buy a phone cash from Vodacom Stores and then only use sims in it from other networks.

The manufacturer will repair the phone under their warranty...but from Vodacom's side if the warranty is pended due to inactivity of the IMEI on the Vodacom network, then Vodacare Repair will not book the phone in.

I would never have believed that a different sim card can damage or affect the device? :wtf: I learn something new every day.

wtf, so you saying my brand new replacement iphone 4 thats now a spare and been sitting in my desk for the last 3 months now has no warranty?
what bs is that

If we look at it logically.
Maybe cell c wont help me cos i am not using their sim card in their phone, ditto for VC and MTN.
But, the manufacturers warranty should still hold and i should be able to take it straight to them.
Question is, can we actually do this? Or would the manufacturer state that i must go thro the SP.

Far as I see it the reseller is responsible for the guarantee and getting it sorted by the manufacturer but I know with my last phone (bought cash) pep also told me if I don't use MTN I have no warranty (who cares when you pay R95 for a phone but when you get a R5K+phone I would also be pissed).

I can understand this to some degree. The network often subsidise a phone (not recover it's full value over 24 months subscription) to attract new customers to their network with the hope to make profit on voice (so the sim must stay active and be used). A lot of people get these bargain deals on the phones they want on other networks they're not intending to use, and this is what the networks try to discourage with these warranty rules.

wtf? why doe you have an iPhone 4 without a sim in it? FFS get a starter pack and stick the sim in there. Your battery is probably shot to sht.

Question is, i am still using the sim, just not on the phone they providedme with.

OMG.

So basically I bought a blackberry 9300 3G cash because they don't want to give me a contract. I bought it from vodacom and I'm not using vodacom at all. I use cell c. So my warranty will get void. I think that is bs. Can't be.

I will just take it back to CNA because they book the phone in and they won't know......

They did tell me that I can only use vodacom otherwise the warrenty is void I just though it was load of bs because it sound like it.

They know how to check.
After some digging, found that SP check if the imei no. Of the phone has logged onto the network.
Cna may not know though.

Not to mention that CNA didn't even give me a vodacom simcard with the phone. They told me it was the phone only.
