A new, higher capacity DStv PVR is planned

Well this isn't necessarily a bad move..

BUT, if they're going to charge more for these new PVRs just so that customers can possibly take advantage of a new service that costs extra... I think they might have a bit of a problem getting traction on them

I think the prices should stay the same as hard drive prices plummet every single month, however this is monochoice we are dealing with.

I wonder if the prices of the current model will drop after the new one is released.

Open to all - even non subscribers?

Sounds good .... as long as there is no subscription and all revenue hey receive is from me ordering the movie :/

I find the HD PVR decoder to be really laggy when navigating menus, and horrible for fast forwarding through video. The SD decoder is really snappy in both of the above areas.

So hopefully they upgrade HD PVR the processor at the same time.

If you are looking for an opportunity to add value to your servies introduce an option to create your own bouquet. At the moment you are getting 0 percent of R559 from me, whereas I am prepared to pay for the 6 channels I want.

That option will never be presented to you by Multichoice..... accept it and spend your money elsewhere.

+1

The existing HD-PVR has a USB, Ethernet and eSATA port, these could all be used for additional disk.
You could always replace the existing disk with a 1TB-3TB drive at minimal cost.

Let them enable USB ports on the current decoders so that people can download content to their pc's or hdd's. Just an idea...

Why would they need bigger hard drives when it takes a day to download a movie and then you can only watch it for 2 days there after it is deleted? or can 15 movies be downloaded in one day and then you have access to it for 2 days? if so who is going to watch more than 15 movies in 2 days. Are these movies streamed? can you watch them while they are been downloaded...Maybe I’m a dumb ass but the reasons they are giving for needing bigger hard drives is not making any sense. Or is this just another way of multichoice tricking the non-tech public into buying something they dont need?

The original batch of Pace HDPVR's have terrible performance.

Mine, which was one of the first few (from July/Aug 2008) was very slow.
I was told it was the dish, cables, solar flares, lunar cycle, etc, everything else except a PVR hardware issue.
I replace the cables, the disk, everything except the PVR - even moved house.
I suffered with the slow performance for nearly 3 years.

Last month - my Pace HDPVR started random rebooting, so I took it in to the repair center.
They replaced it for about R350.

Guess what, the performance issue resolved!

I suspect the original PVR's had a hardware issue that can not be resolved via firmware.
Requires replacement hardware.

So, if your Pace HDPVR is one of the original slow batch, I suggest take back and ask for a replacement.

So, they want you to pay for the extra HDD space so they can take it, upload VOD and then expect you to pay to watch it.....

A bigger bin to put all the DSTV programming rubbish in.

I think it is already being flogged at the current pricing... I would not be surprised if the smaller current one is discontinued soon...
