MTN signs Opera deal

MTN is failing and i am thinking that i will finally switch after 10 years of loyalty on both prepaid and contract.

/shrugs

MTN said that the collaboration with Opera Software will provide their subscribers with a more affordable, user-friendly and faster mobile Web experience

I smell marketing BS. If this is what they want to achieve then offer a cheap bundled data service like BIS, do they really think that a co-branded browser is going to make that much of a difference?

This is alrerady in place for the last month now? Noticed it on my wifes satio. When starting opera, tabs are predefined. If they serious, they should route all traffic thru the opera servers to compress a la BIS.
Now that will get my attention

MTN is disregarding the data price cuts from voda & cell c and decides to issue a press release about opera mini?is mtn not aware that most operators including vodacom have this kind of partnership?rpm, are you sure that this article is recent news?

Pointless. Have they not heard of Net Neutrality. We want to be able to use whatever software we want, when we want, how we want. All you (MTN, Vodacom, etc) need to do is provide us with a nice big fat pipe that is reliable, stable, and most importantly, affordable. It must also be unrestricted and unshaped (not necessarily uncapped). We will decide what we want to suck through the pipe, and which apps to use to do the sucking. Sometimes we will want to blow bubbles through the pipe as well.

If you can't understand the importance of the pipe, then you have failed. The internet is already full of decent apps, services, music sites, content sites, etc. We don't need you to go reinvent these and then stick your own labels and price tags to them. You're wasting my time, your time and the time of the entire African continent. The services and apps are out there. Give us the pipe and we will find it ourselves. We don't need you for that.

It's all about the pipe damnit! Go and ask Cell C and Lars Reichelt how it's done if you're still krapping kop.

Actually this is good news, I was shocked how many people access the web without browsers like Opera to save costs, this is the bet way to educate most cell phone users. Mtn's pricing on the other hand is completely different story.

Rpm leave that, are you sure this is news at all?! I mean goog-o-rola, THATs news. MTN needs a marketing shake up.
Unless ofcourse, they're implying that this will provide completely free browsing and downloads to their mobile subscribers. If not, they seriously need to pull their act together.

Christian de Faria, MTN Group’s Chief Commercial Officer:
By offering faster access to websites and easy entry to MTN portals, MTN subscribers can reach the content they want, with less frustration and less expense. With just one click, customers have music, news, games, and information on MTN products and services at their fingertips,”

Translation:
Under the guise of offering you faster access to the web,
we will, using MTN modified Opera browser, redirect you to MTN's portals where MTN can force you to their content, see what you are browsing and sell you stuff.

Sound like a re-launch of the failed MTN Play.

MTN Symbian phones had their home page forced to MTN Play.
The worst experience ever - could not even change the home page to a useful location like google.
