Review of the TP-Link W8960N Wireless-N ADSL router

got one of these....and must say its great and damn good value for money
 
Does any body know where I can get one of these? Are they for sale in local electronic retailers?

The new modem, sorry, router, is awesome, and if I had a stamp, I'd stamp it with my approval.
 
Thanks guys. but I suppose I should have been a little more specific when I said "in". Are they available in brick and mortar stores locally?

It seems like Uniterm Direct is the only place where you can buy it online in SA, without paying an absurd amount like at Have2Have.

I pretty much just recommend TP-Link & D-Link ADSL modems, with the exception of Linksys/Cisco/Buffalo when it comes to dual band, gigabit & 802.11n routers.

So far I've heard nothing but positive things about this specific ADSL modem.
 
Using the same for past year and a half 24/7. Not a single glitch. Great Wi-Fi coverage. Just make sure to update the firmware.
 
I bought one of these about 2 weeks ago. The guys at Uniterm gave great service while ordering. The modem/router itself is pretty good. So far the only problems I have had are:

1. The wireless channel was set to 'auto' by default, and it seemed to drop the wireless connection from time to time. Changing this to channel 6 sorted this issue out.
2. The range isn't any better than my old Linksys WRT54G router.
3. Wireless LAN performance is pretty poor. Copying from one machine to the other I get speeds ranging from 650KB/s to 1.54MB/s. Not great seen as both PC's report wireless connection speeds of 150Mbps. I'd kinda expect it to perform better than my Wireless G setup where I was getting transfer speeds of around 2.3MB/s.
4. It has 'locked up' on me twice, meaning that the internet just dies. Lights on the modem are on signalling that ADSL is up, but no traffic. Powercycling the router sorted this out. This did not happen with previous modem (a Linksys POS)

All in all, for the price paid, it is pretty good. biggest downside to me is the poor LAN speeds. I have googled a little to see if there are any fixes, and I'm not the only one experiencing this.
 
To tardomatic, maybe you can try to exchange the unit. Your problems does not sound right. Never used Linksys, but used Netgear N300, TP-Link defo has better coverage no doubt. My copy speed is around 7-8MB/s. I know no where near 300Mb/s but this is the reality. To improve the speed you can try to change your router to 40mhz channel. That might help. Never "locked up" maybe try to upgrade the firmware if you haven't done that all ready.
 
Gee wizz, since when does hardware become breaking news ? OK, I have to agree it seems a great offer for the price nothing will probably beat it. But I enjoy the fact that I attach my external HDD to my router and share it as 'NAS'.

Can not agree with you more, specially for the device that was released 2 years ago. Probably pure advertisement :(

Your speed estimations are pretty on par with what you should be getting. 300Mb/s translates to roughly 37.5MB/s transfer rate. If you consider it's a half-duplex technology and losses through interference and signal degradation, 7-8MB/s is not too bad. Almost competes with fast Ethernet.

Obivously you 2 numbnuts did not read the title of the article. It says REVIEW. And personally, I find this very useful. I'm considering getting one of these as a backup / test device for our office, for when our ADSL lines go wonky and Telkom blames the hardware.
 
Been using this for about two years now.

Quite good, but it as with everything it comes with a few quirks.

When you switch ISP accounts with it, it wipes out your NAT settings and a few others, and you have to set it up again.

Kudos to Uniterm Direct though, their service is EXCELLENT.
