On Friday I closed my laptop just before 10 am and was mostly on the road until I quickly checked email etc around 3 pm. From then I was at a party (with USB dongle WITH me and laptop in car, no other computers around).

The next morning when I want to go online the about 700 mb data bundle was gone.

Phoned Cell C. Said I used the 700 MB Friday evening and they send me a series of Sms'es with logs. (that just confirm above and show 6 MB used around 3 pm)

Anyone have some idea as to what happened as I am sure as hell going to give Cell C all the bad publicity I can mobilize?

PM the Cell C rep here, he should be able to assist you.

From then I was at a party (with USB dongle WITH me >
... sheesh... what kinda parties you go to? :P

Just a few family members. Laptop bags not always manufactured for USB dongles so I regarded my jacket pocket as the safest place haha. maybe I should say braai instead of party.

Oh and by the way. 700 MB will take couple of hours and with the poor connection from where I was after 3 pm it would take perhaps DAYS to download 700 MB. (Tried to went online once late evening but signal too weak. HAD to drive out of the hills the next morning to do some work from my laptop in car since I was far away from home and then discovered no data was left. (No usual warning sms when bandwidth is low either)

Good Day Frankc

Please can you PM me your details.
Will look in to it for you.

Already send PM without any reaction yet so I am going to do what I usually does with excellent results. Start publishing articles and NAME the relevant persons and BLAME top management for being unable to control their staff.

By the way. The new 8ta offer is 3 GB for R149 so compare that to 1) The poor service and 2) The data / bandwidth theft by Cell C. (Unless they can pinpoint and proof that it's somebody outside, I am going from the standpoint that it's stolen by Cell C's staff or problematic systems.

I lost 5GB last month (PC was on for ONE evening and was NOT windows updates etc.)

Cell C also could not find the cause. This month it did not happen again (but I was much more careful and changed my WiFi password as well).

But would have loved to know WHAT chowed that 5GB in one evening....

Data disappering - what happened?

Back in May, I went through a bit of a dilemma. I noticed one day while using my Cell C modem that something was stealing my bandwidth. I know I’ve read about some malware programs that do this, and so I went about scanning my hard drive. I saw that I had two or three Trojans on there, and I started to get a bit worried. I’m not sure if they were causing that specific problem – they might have even been false positives in some cases – but I wasn’t going to take any chances.

So after reading up online on the course of action to take, I disconnected my PC from the web, and cleaned it up as best I could. Then I backed up all my important information, and from there, I went online and changed all the passwords on my most important accounts – even increasing security measures where applicable, favouring OTP (one time password) or 2-step verification procedures to further prevent possible hacking.

I found that running Spyware Terminator with Real-Time protection actually stopped the bandwidth theft, which leads me to think it was malware. I thought about bandwidth theft and WiFi, but after speaking to a tech, he told me that this isn't likely possible, and people can't hack in to my PC locally even, because the Cell C device is 3G-based. Is that true?

I reformatted my harddrive (something that was long overdue), and proceeded to set my system up as best I could. I installed up- to-date internet security, and did some scans on a clean system – brought nothing else back that I could see. Going online, there was no more bandwidth disappearing going on, even without Spyware Terminator.

So my after a few months, I just want questions answered. What happened? Was it malware? I read about some guy who lost 5GB in one night! I lost maybe 20 or 30 MB.

I wish i read this post earlier, i have this problem every month.

I lose roughly 2 - 6 GB every month between two 5 GB speedsticks.

I eventually gave up with the technical department queries as i have more reference numbers than a school head count.

My two sticks now are purely backup only, as i was forced to go back to ADSL.
