Just received a promotional email from ESQUIRE (www.esquire.co.za). Basically their pricing structure for IPADS:

IPAD2 16gb R4999* (R5,700 inclusive)
IPAD2 32gb R5999* (R6,700 inclusive)
* exclusive VAT

Went to Makro on Monday, they just received IPADS. R5,499, R6,499 and R7,499

And then we received this FNB special 24xR200 (R4,800) for an 16gb ipad. Why are there so much difference. Esquire is afterall a wholeseller. Makro sells eaches to the man in the street. And FNB - well they have their strategy ofcourse.

Quite simple volume ...who ever buys the bigger volume gets the better discount

Core group is the main supplier of apple products in SA as far as I am aware. They have "special" relationships with some company's. When the iPad2 came into SA i could not order from them although I have a account. They told me that only certain clients are allowed to purchase iPad 2's, they mentioned Digicape and Incredible Corruption so I am assuming they most probably have preferential clients that might get better deals as well ...

Well let's be honest, Esquire isn't exactly in the same league as Firstrand and Massmart financially.

But even if Esquire wasn't competing with two JSE top 40 listed companies(Massmart and Firstrand), the prices of Esquire is still higher than even Incredible Connection when I looked the other day, which is a bit embarrassing IMHO.

Aren't they supposed to be "competing" with IC (surely they are in the same pond?)

Thank you for your comments firstly let me assure you that our iPads 2 are all Local stocks with Local warranty, and not making thousands of rand profit on these units.

We do not import Grey products, which can be considerably cheaper but with an overseas warranty, this is totally against our company policy and would be unfair to our clients.

The reason that our pricing is higher than the companies mentioned is that we are paying almost the same pricing as the end user and making less than 2% on these units.

We sell these units purely as a service to our clients that purchase from us on a daily basis and also to sell our Manhattan iPad accessories which are almost 200% lower than those you would buy from those above companies mentioned (Please feel free to compare our pricing on our accessories)

Even with our pricing that is higher we cannot get enough stocks, and have sold over 500 units in the last two months and still struggling to get stocks in , also all the units we sell come standard with Wi-Fi and 3G and most importantly a Local Warranty.

Regards
ESQ

EDIT: @Redsbaron I Just called some of the stores that you mentioned a few min ago
they quoted me a much higher pricing also told me that the price you mention is for the units without 3G. If you can get those units with WiFi and 3G and local warranty grab it

weird, I somehow assumed Esquire imported the bulk of the products they sell?

you assumption is correct we do import 90% of our stuff as we have distributions agreements with our overseas Vendors , but it is against our policy to grey import a product that is already established in South Africa , we will rather sacrifice our margin but give our clients “The real McCoy”
and value for money.

I don't buy that, I'm sure you parallel import a fair amount of product, not that I see anything wrong with that.

Back to the topic, you are forcing me to go to IC, that is quite nasty - just called them and their iPad2 32Gb with 3G is R6700, Esquire is R6839.00, so if you are making 2% they are making 0, sucks to be in the PC business in this country then.

Pity IC is closer, but shot thanks, next time.

Grey imports description is a way that local resellers con the consumer into paying a lot more for locally bought items than those bought abroad. Most electronic items have worldwide warranties due to the traveler purchasing items and returning home. HiFi Corporation was a Grey Importer but supported locally. A company like apple will support their international warranty. If not then buy a Samsung Tablet which gives you more and costs a lot less.
