Internet piracy ruling challenged

U.S. and Australian movie and television studios are challenging a landmark court ruling that an Internet service provider cannot be held accountable for illegal movie downloads by its customers.
 
of course all ISPs other than the ones owned by the parent companies to the music and film studios. While we are on vicarious liability surely PC hardware manufacturers whose hardware facilitates the viewing of "illegal material" should be liable. Can you not stream illicit material on a Sony Playstation?
 
lol stupid media companies trying to fight it instead of embracing it to your advantage,maybe do a free ad supported version or come up with something......its working for google and apple itunes!

Then if people dont want to be bothered by ads then theyll go buy it online or from the brick and mortar stores etc

This model will be almost CERTAIN to net them ALOT more money then by trying to curtail piracy with current methods.

Instead of trying to change the industry, they must adapt their business model to the modern times
 
All these nanny states - US, Aus, UK, - they litterally get teh ISP to cancel your connection after 3 warnings. No joke.
 
If it's an ISP's responsibility to check packets of data and determine whether or not those packets contain copyright infringing material, then it follows that they should also be able to determine when people are having conversations via email or skype or any other chat program about criminal activities. Perhaps then ISP's should be compelled to inform the police.

ISP's are not the internet police. They do not and should not have the right to monitor our data other than for network monitoring purposes.

The old farts behind the world's biggest media companies don't want to have to fork out money to fight their own legal battles so they want ISP's to be turned into defacto judge and jury. Apart from which, all these large companies are always talking about how great the free market is, stop government interference and let the market decide. They should take their own advice and stop whinging. Let the market decide whether the crap you produce is worth paying for.
