MWEB calls for quick win LLU solutions, like Naked ADSL and lower IPC prices

ICASA is not interested in reducing prices. Their bosses at Telkom will not allow that.

Why are no other ISP's jumpin on board? Unless I'm mistaken..
Shouldn't this benefit them all?

Can anyone hazard an educated guess as to what % the IPC cost constitutes as a total cost to the ISP for provisioning an ADSL service to the customer?

I think its time MWEB take this to the courts ... this is just ridiculous that ICASA/telscum can hold the country to ransom like this, because they cannot sustain their business model

I put together a graph of why we need full LLU.

Bitstream access and cheaper IP Connect will help bring down data costs, but at the moment you pay more to Telkom just to have ADSL than you pay the ISP for data.

The parts in red is what LLU can help bring down. As you can clearly see, those are the larger factors in consumer ADSL cost now.

Telkom's IPC cost is ridiculous. It really is the first thing ICASA should look at.

They gave the number at one point. I honestly can't remember the exact number but 70% seems to ring a bell.

Telkom’s IPC is currently the only way ISPs can connect to the last mile on the Telkom infrastructure. But Jansen says that at six times the cost of connecting to Europe, the prohibitive cost of national broadband is stifling industry growth.

This speaks for itself.
Helkom screwing us again

That is truly astounding. We can bitc* all we want at ICASA and Telkom but until government divests its interest in Telkom liberalisation will continue at a snails pace.

Yip, it is outrageous, but then it does represent some low hanging fruit which would dramatically lower uncapped pricing and increase quality. They just need to force Telkom to drop the price by about 80% or so(which would be fair). A few weeks after that we would see 4meg uncapped accounts going for R200-250 with far less shaping. Beautiful dream that.

Why don't Jansen and company build their own network?

I think the main problem is that it'd take a decade to get it up and running and widespread... it took the durban municipality a few years for their water pipe replacement programme here (dug up and replaced every pipe in every street and to every house), and they were really fast and efficient, probably a best case scenario. What makes me mad is that they should have laid fiber before covering up the holes. grr.

I'm sure that Mweb and IS are both planning their own networks, but if they can avoid doing it and leverage existing infrastructure, that'd be first prize. Sure, they could obviously target the low hanging fruit earlier, but that'd mean me as a homeowner would have to wait months or years while they hook up all the housing estates :(

Everyone with ADSL is subsidizing Telkoms voice lines. Also about 80% to 90% of peoples monthly internet bill goes to Telkom. ADSL line + Voice line + 70% of the amount paid to the ISP for data goes to Telkoms coffers.
