HTC Flyer finally getting Honeycomb

Great news. I've been using the HC update for a while thanks to the guys at xda developers and it's a must-do.

Erm... ok, what about ICS?

Honeycomb is so, last year, well almost :)

Going by this track record, we'll get ICS as soon as Google releases Android 5.0 ;)

Let's take it one step at a time, my dear Elimentals. At least this is a very significant step by turning a gigantic phone (that can do anything but make a phone call) into something that resembles an actual tablet. Remember the Flyer hardware is also in itself literally "almost so last year".

My only hope is that this update doesn't get sat on by LEAF (I presume they're still the sole HTC distributors in SA?), as we should be getting the update at about the same it's available in Europe! If it's on 16 December as they seem to indicate, that'll be close enough!

Well Seeing that MIPS can get ICS on there hardware I dont see what HTC's excuse is, besides ICS is much better suited for the Flyer.

See the new NOVO 7 ad below.

And that for only $100

So again, HTC should catch a wakeup

Edit: oooh found the actual order page on http://www.ainovo.com/. Shipping it here would probably cost the same as the device :)

Been using the FlyHoney ROM from xda for sometime now. Really good stuff.

I do hope that HTC will make ICS available to the Flyer.

I agree, but they should have caught the wakeup long ago, as the Flyer is only barely a 2011 device! That being said, only time on Honeycomb will tell if the hardware is still capable of holding its own; even against new phones currently hitting the market with 1.4Ghz dual core uP's.

I rated HTC down quite substantially in a customer satisfaction survey a month or so after receiving my Flyer, as I was originally told that the update would have happened in August and perceived that to be very late already! After numerous attempts to access Leaf, I gave up. The Leaf website looks more like a place-holder than a website. I think they'll do better for their name to just shut down their dysfunctional website. Some overseas HTC callcentre actually phoned me back regarding the Honeycomb issue, but they seemed to be just as much "in the dark" as all their HTC customers. I find that lack of intra-company communication really disconcerting!

I was originally very impressed with my wife's HTC HD2, as any device that can survive her handbag will also survive a concrete mixer! It was my intention to upgrade to a HTC Sensation or Evo, but as regret over my Flyer acquisition was starting to slowly take hold, I decided on a Samsung Galaxy Note which has effectively now taken the place of my Flyer.

I do think, though, that the Honeycomb update can replace my regret with satisfaction (but definitely not enthusiasm), if it is properly implemented. They certainly have had more than enough time to get it right! ICS would have been first prize, but my optimism regarding HTC's doings up to now, didn't even reach to the levels of Honeycomb! I'm actually very surprised they still went to the trouble!

Just received a notification that there is a software upgrade available for my HTC Flyer.
The upgrade is for Android 3.2 Honeycomb, and is 210 Mb.

User interface will change, but all user data will be unaffected.

Will see what it is like once the download completes.

Let me know. My flyer is laying in the boot of the car - dying a sad Death? hmmmm who knows. Keep us posted and maybe, just maybe, I may start using it again because as much as i HATE iPad/Apple I may just get one!

Exactly how I feel. I would however, prefer Android 3 or 4 on my Flyer instead of a Note because I assume sketching would be much easier with the 7" vs ~ 5.3" on the Samsung, which it sounds like you now are using. I'm curious how full-featured Samsung's note taking application is compared to the lightweight abilities of the Flyer note program? For instance, can you import a Powerpoint and mark it up? That would be handy for biz or school as many lectures are built on that format--and is something I was fond of doing with my convertible PC and Microsoft OneNote back in college. OneNote is a great program which I would love to see on Android, BTW (I think there is something for iOS).

hmmmmmmmm......

ok........

First impression is that this is going to take some getting used to.
The 4 "buttons" at the bottom of the screen are no longer there. Instead they are replaced with a taskbar, with a bunch of new icons.
The default colour is also interesting. Blue. Clicking on an icon I get a "loading" sign that is similar to windows 7 - a blue spinning cirlcle.

What I don't like is that there are 2 homescreens on either side of the homepage.
In the past I was able to scroll through all 5 homescreens continuously.
Now I have to go 2 left, then 2 right.

The scrolling seems smooth, no lag or hickups so far.

Only time will tell whether this upgrade is worth it....

Thanks for that pezulu! I am not happy to lose the touch buttons at the bottom! Does the stylus button still work?

Can you now use the pen to do normal menu navigation ?

Now THAT is a GREAT question.... waiting baited breath for the reply hahaha

The pen now works to do all normal finger taps.
On the whole I think the upgrade is for the better.
Being an "ou toppie" I prefer to use what I know. Getting used to the Flyer was one thing, now I have to get used to it again.

One thing that does bug me though, is that all the secondary home pages have split screens, meaning that you can fit 2 widgets on every screen. I am more used to the larger displays, so this will be something else to get used to.

Yeah i know what yuo mean! I am the same. Especially when i have to "learn" something i have used for ages all over again! I am happy about the stylus though because for me it was a useless item for the most part!

Best part is that Whatsapp now workable on it. Super cool. But you must download the file from whatsapp website...not on the market.
