HTC Flyer finally getting Honeycomb

Best part is that Whatsapp now workable on it. Super cool. But you must download the file from whatsapp website...not on the market.

AHHHH that is awesome because i had it working then there was an update and it continued to work and then i did a hard reset and that was that! couldn't install again!

Just received a notification that there is a software upgrade available for my HTC Flyer.
The upgrade is for Android 3.2 Honeycomb, and is 210 Mb.

User interface will change, but all user data will be unaffected.

Will see what it is like once the download completes.

Cool. I'm going to have to check when I get home whether my update is ready. I've been looking forward to trying Honeycomb on the Flyer since I got it. It's mostly been sitting around my house being used for the odd Google search when I'm too lazy to go to my PC.

Still, I can't complain too much. I am only paying R82/month X 24 (R100 airtime) with no pay-in. I got mine when MTN made a boo-boo on their pricing a few months ago and didn't require any pay-in. :D

One extremely irritating new feature is the music that is played when the weather widget is accessed.
Try as I might, I can't seem to switch that off.
I can switch the sound effects off, but that the switches the thunder/rain/wind effects off as well.

Oooh, and another nifty new feature.....
Screenshots are now enabled when using the stylus.

Sounds like the usual pros and cons hey. Busy downloading now!

I won't touch Honeycomb. I got the Flyer because it didn't run Honeycomb. Gingerbread is way better.

But the touch buttons don't work anymore? I want those buttons.

The buttons have been replaced with a taskbar at the top and bottom.

The traditional menu icon only appears when it is needed.

A screenshot of my homepage...

I am getting used to the new way of doing things, and actually prefer it.

Tapping on the date/time/battery icon gives a pop-up with the remaining juice in the battery, as well as another icon where you get shortcuts for airplane mode, notifications, wi-fi setup and general settings.

Tapping on the paint pallette brings up the personalize menu.

The apps icon still opens the apps, just in a better way, in that the last view is opened.

The microphone in the top left opens the speech search engine, and once you learn how to pronounce words "correctly" it works well, taking you to a google search where the words you spoke are translated into a google search.

The pen now works as a stylus.

The traditional back button is now in the lower left corner. The home icon still brings you back to your homepage. Multi-tasking is easier with the folder icon, that shows the last recent pages you had open, and opens them for you.

Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like there are a number of improvements. I updated last night, but haven't had a chance to play around with it yet.

My Flyer got the Honeycomb update today and I must admit it looks good ... much better than on my SGT 10.1. I'm becoming an HTC fan. This Flyer is in my books a winner.

I also see Dixons UK dropped the price to 199 Euro

Hope we will see the same type of price cuts soon.

I'm seriously impressed with the Flyer. This is the one tablet that beats the iPad imo. The smaller size works really well ... it can go everywhere. It is a solid device, very well designed and made. OS with Sense is a beauty. Everything works. My favourite tablet. That Dixons price is a winner. Definately worth getting for those that can get there.

I just wish they can improve battery life on these Android devices. My Flyer runs out juice in 3/4 of a day. Same with my SGS2. My iPad runs laps around these devices when it comes to battery life. Frustrating to always have battery life concerns on the go.

That is the problem generated by proper multitasking. Apple only allow selective services to run in the background so it uses a lot less power. If I look at Watchdog, I normally run about 30-40 processes in the background.... that end up accumulating when we talking about power consumption.

If you want more power, use less widgets and disable stuff that normally run in the background, oh wait then you end up with iOS limitations... nevamind :)

PS: Hope you picked up Amazon's free app today. Where's my water is a great game, even better on tablets like the flyer.

The kids have played Wheres My Water through already .... bored with the tablets now. To keep kids busy on holiday these days requires a massive variety of things ... not how it used to be ... LOL.

After my unfortunate Honeycomb experience on my Samsumg 10.1 tablet I was not at all keen to load it on my Flyer. In my mind Honeycomb was an epic failure. In my experience Android worked great om my Galaxy S2 phone but iOS was way better on the iPad. Well ... the Flyer changed all of that for me. The Honeycomb on the Flyer works great and is beautiful. HTC did a fantastic job with Sense on the Flyer. Even my wallpapers have been saved from the terrible cropping implementation on the SGT. This is all a tablet should be.

... and my 3G data counter works correctly on the Flyer. Something still not fixed on Samsung GT (after many months).

Yep. You were spot on. Only now can I truly appreciate the power of Android. When it works right - as on the Flyer - it is for sure better than iOS.
