Digital TV pricing and roll-out: the road ahead

When one considers this, an entry-level STB that will cost R700 isn’t practical when the critical functionality is available at a fraction of the cost, Willenberg said.

TV's from the EU are able to received DVB-T2 directly - digital receiver is embedded - and they less than ZA TV's.

you really think the goverment will miss out on a golden opportunity to offer a tender to their buddies to make STB's ??

the signal will be encrypted, you can bet your bottom dollar on it!

South Africa’s migration from analogue to digital broadcasting has been fraught with delays and debates, the most recent of which centres around the use of encryption on free-to-air (FTA) channels.

Centres on, revolves around. Don't mix them. Ever.

this is all utter nonsense. i see headlines re dtv and I just lol

i know loads of people with LCD/Plasma and ONE of them has a built in digital tuner....

ROFL like I will ever pay R 700.00 for a gadget so that I can watch SABC / e-TV and then TV license fees on top of that. Maybe if SABC / e-TV managed to keep up with the current decade...hmm nope still doubt it.

Are there many TV's locally that even have DVB-T2 receivers built in?? As far as I know most new TV's only have DVB-T built in. Does anyone know if the trial DTT transmission is still on?

Well, I have been using the trial service in Pretoria (East) until last week --- it appears to have stopped. Does anyone know what the real explanation is?

Fuse popped in transmitter / Forgot to top up pre-paid meter / Someone stole the cables

Possibly now testing DVB-T2 instead of DVB-T?

Just one thing that disturbs about some comments here... Are your'll are naïve enough to believe anything Multichoice says ! This is a company come month end bends you over and screws you on your bill.

Look up on GoTv Africa ... This encryption throws a huge monkey wrench into their plans. Now they have to have 2 sets of encryption which makes their stb price go much higher.

Probably an inevitable migration to DVB-T2.
I wanted to try this but finding a DVB-T mpeg4 usb turner in Durban is quite difficult. What channels were available ? Were they any good ? Do you have any pics ?
