Buying a 3D LED TV

Well here's a graph to illustrate in comparison to one of the best Plasmas and some similar LEDs ...

Did u put an LG and others (3Ds) side by side and compare - If you do, you will agree with all the reviewers over the world that describes LGs cinema3D technology a bombshell thats been dropped on their competitors. Do some homework of recent reviews on the subject and you'll see. There is no issue to debate here actually - its already decided by reviewers and experiences of LG 3D TV owners. Their friends come and visit them and then they see too.

Sure their 3D technology might be great, but that doesn't get past the fact that this particular set has seriously poor black levels as Roman pointed out, one the more important things to look at when buying a TV.

A bit unfair to compare the higher range from other brands to a mid range LG, not? I can promise you, do yourself a favor and visit a friend or whatever with an LG LW series 3D, view a decent 2D HD film and see if the experience is so bad that that plays a factor.

Seriously?

Not side-by-side but I've looked at the LW range extensively. I usually go to the movies at Monte Casino, outside which resides LG's flagship showroom. Often pop in to take a look at whats new from their side.

Seriously?

Yes. For PQ, contrast (i.e deepest blacks and brightest whites) are the most important factor. Then comes resolution and other less important factors.

You can't win until your brand puts up against Samsung and Sony.

I own a Sony, my friend owns an LG. Only people that have a biased view towards their own preference will really make an issue of this as the practical experience differ. Sure there is a difference between 0.03 cd/m2 and 0.08 cd/m2 but it is by far not the train smash you want to make it out to be.

Could not agree more. However when using facts, PVA > IPS at black levels.

Here is a different review result for the LW series which paints a different picture

Out of the box vs Calibrated
Black level 0.15 cd/m2 vs 0.08 cd/m2
Brightness 242 cd/m2 vs 120 cd/m2
Contrast ratio 1600:1 vs 1500:1

http://www.flatpanelshd.com/review.php?subaction=showfull&id=1301662476
Yes but if you investigate further you'll see the pattern is consistant, that being LG's panels underperform on deep blacks.

Also you can't compare measurements between review sites, they have different calibration systems and settings preferences to get to best picture calibration. As in the televisioninfo review, compare the (few grand cheaper than LW6500) Sony EX720's measurements from flatpanelshd ...

Black level 0.08 cd/m2 0.03 cd/m2
Brightness 207 cd/m2 116 cd/m2
Contrast ratio 2588:1 3867:1

And remember the scale is logarithmic, so a few decial points at the low end count as much as 10s of units at the high end.

Well - I wear black all the time so I consider myself to be an expert on black and LGs black is good enough for me and I'm 52 years old too yadda yadda yadda do u wanna know more cha cha cha blah blah blah.

Depending on which IPS technology you refer to and then only at black levels but in other important areas they excell the PVA panels by far. If you consider the IPS Pro panel there is no match. Also you have to consider the year of manufacture of the IPS panel. As recent as 2011 the IPS panels improved the specs even more. This updated wiki may help.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TFT_LCD

Go down to IPS section and read about the technology improvement. study the table and take note that Panasonic is using the IPS-A and LG the AH - IPS. Then head up to the Main display technology section and study the table. You have to keep up with the fast pace technology as Plasma's and PVA will fall by the wayside soon.

this summary may also help a bitm
Summary of LCD Panel Technology
S-IPS/H-IPS panels are generally considered the best all around panel type, but they are more expensive and very few are made. High end, expensive.
S-PVA/MVA panels offer better color reproduction and viewing angles than TN panels, have slightly worse response times than TN or IPS, offer the best contrast ratios, may suffer from color shifting or input lag and have higher availability than S-IPS panels. Mid range, fair price.
TN panels are very cheap and have the fastest response times, but suffer from inferior color reproduction, contrast ratios and viewing angles. Low end, inexpensive.

I am well versed in the Wiki, use it to base many of my arguments.

Sorry but from what I read, S-PVA sounds to be the better. I can also safely ignore what they say about input lag with S-PVA, as I game competitively at a high level on 32" S-PVA LCD. In fact I chose my specific LCD TV because of its low input lag.

Unfortunately these S-PVA benefits only seem to ring true after reading professional reviews and tests of IPS vs PVA in general.

Anyway, this is drifting off topic, I'm quite sure the original topic was black levels.

No the original topic is Buying a 3D LED TV. You made this thread off topic by discussion about the black levels and raised the fact that PVA > IPS.

Wrong, I argued against an incorrect statement and used the link you provided me to prove what I've experienced - poor black levels on IPS panels. It's a fact.

Ultimately, both techs are so close that it generally boils down to contrast ratio. Better contrast ratio, better PQ. I guess that's also why people are buying more Samsung LCD TVs.

Welcome to 2012, btw.

HOW PATHETIC! The 2012 technology regards to TV's is not available yet.

Agreed, it's unnecessary worrying about a few 0.0x CD/m of black difference or what ever for most people. If they're worrying about that they should at least have a dark room suited for HT.

Of course these aren't always truisms for every model, low end and high end, etc.

My point is that it's not as cut and dried as your original assertion that LG's IPS is the best. :)

Now suddenly it's the "Be all"
Point is ....... absolute BS

Wikipedia seems to think PVA is better? Why would IPS be the best? Poor black levels IME.

Read reviews on the internet and study that tables wiki page again, without blinkers. Also black levels is not the only criteria for PQ.

Still waiting for you to prove/defend your statement.

He has done that in his post prior to this

Is that the LED plasma?

No standoff comedian here, just a lame attemp to ...

Yes, I understand that a FHD LG 3D TV runs at half FHD resolution (1920x540 per eye) when displaying 3D content.

You again were proven wrong and never acknowledged it.

As I said how pathetic. Just because some MyBB members did not buy YOUR idea of what a TV should be. ie. a Plasma or Samsung 550. Get over it now.

Talking about your interest in dwelling in the past. Not keen to entertain your intertwining of several week old discussions with current discussions pertaining to a certain topic, black levels.

I just reaffirmed that in my agreement with you. I don't understand how one can argue though, with scientifically-obtained results and documentation.

I've read the Wiki. My post is questioning another's claim of IPS being the best - something I fail to observe after reading the Wiki. Perhaps I need those internet reviews, or specific sections of Wiki - if you could kindly link them.

Read reviews on the internet, conveniently pasted for you, about PVA vs IPS and black levels, correctly.

He has done that in his post prior to this

Means nothing as to how "IPS is best." While both techs have their benefits, going by the Wiki on S-PVA and similarities in aspects leading to PQ in current days (other than black levels), it seems more convincing that S-PVA would have more people saying S-PVA is better.

Complain to the internet review site.

We advise individuals based on their own rooms, interests, and budgets. Often a certain TV type is generally suited to that type of room. So yes, on a budget which is where most are shopping, Samsung LAxxD550 CCFL backlit LCDs are often recommended for bright rooms; while PSxxD550 plasmas are recommended for dimmer rooms. Perhaps it just so happens that most people's rooms have been designed/arranged for the best (dim) viewing conditions. It is keen interest, IRL experiences, Wiki, as well as internet review sites, that we use to advise those who were in our positions before getting into TVs.

And in you opinion any other TV a member may buy or be interested in should have been scrapped. You continually in all TV threads act the ex-spert to "ARGUE", as you put it yourself, the "incorrect" statements or points members made (in your opinion) if they reference to anything that differs from your very own overly biased and outdated opinion based on your experience of the TV's you currently own. When you are given information that prove you wrong you carry on with another dubious angles based on your outdated "knowledge". Drop it now you were caught out.

Geez in one tread you even nearly attacked a member or made him at least feel bad because he did not adhere to your advice or choice of TV and took the advice of a salesman.

Ascribing such particulars of my life experiences and accusing me of attacking members is laughable and I won't go lower. Quote the incorrect statements that are in fact correct. I don't understand how I can be so wrong if my opinion correlates with that of others on the forum, IRL, Wiki and internet review sites. Odd. Why must I drop when when I've replied to your post, given your misunderstandings better understandings, and asked for your submissions of internet review sites to show IPS is the best - all in spirit of good debate? If you are now not interested in debate, you drop it. We'll see what you decide.
