Witness report:

The accident happened on 23 Dec. @ 04h30 , in rainy conditions on a 4 lane highway , 2 lanes per direction.
A family of 4 were travelling in a D3 on holiday when an Audi A4 , doing far in excess of 200km/h lost control and veered off into the oncoming lane into the unfortunate family.

The Audi completely disintegrated, the drivers vital organs were removed by paramedics in the engine bay and on the roof rack of the D3. The impact was so severe that the engine and gearbox were lying in the field separated from each other.

For those who drive a D3/4 , well all that have seen the vehicle here have commented on how well the interior looks after this accident.
I have personally inspected this vehicle and the passenger foot well were pushed back approx 300mm to the rear.
The rest of the D3 were completely intact.
The husband suffered a broken arm, the wife a badly shattered leg , that will need major surgery in the future. The young daughters suffered a knee cap and a shoulder injury respectively. Amazingly they all survived. All were wearing their safety belts.

One of our forumites' family members were in the Discovery3. He posted the link earlier.

that is hectic. I'm glad that everyone in the D3 survived, although obviously some were badly injured.

What a tit for driving 200km/h in rainy conditions at 4:30. From the news article, he lost his wife due to that. the real shame is that he should have been the one to die, for his stupidity.

Who lost a wife? From the article it was only the driver in the Audi, no passenger

Doh! my bad. Where it says "a man lost his life" below, I misread as "a man lost his wife".

Though it's still unclear what caused the accident, it's believed the cars crashed head on about an hour ago.

ER24's Derrick Banks says they believe one of the vehicles lost control due to the roads being slippery.

Earlier this morning a man lost his life while four members of a family were injured in an accident on the N2 just outside Empangeni.

It's believed he lost control of his vehicle after aqua-planing and then veering into oncoming traffic.

I think the high inertia of the speeding Audi actually saved the family in the D3.Had the Audi been going slower the impact would have been more square on.

The audi wreck in the pictures is not what I would call disintegrated.

Man I hate sensationalist reporting.

It's a pretty simple sum of weight. The D3 weighs about twice as much as the Audi if not more. That is why it's better to be driving heavier vehicles vs light weight hatches.

I can't open the link, but how do they know the audi speed?

Eye witness accounts. Both people in the front of the discovery is alive and well. That and vehicle clocks have a feature built into them to record speed at impact. The needle actually breaks off at the back and stays at the last spot it was at the time of the impact. So if his needle is stuck at around 160 then 200 would be a very good guess.

They should name and shame these arrogant drivers that drive so fast.

IMO that western cape initiative of CCTV footage should be extended to the rest of the country but also inlude the details and driver license picture of the driver.

They do have CCTV cameras in Gauteng too. They actually used it in an accident case once (both drivers claimed innocence) and the driver at fault was pwnd.

If the traffic departments in Gauteng are that serious of saving lives instead of making money off fines then they should just create a youtube channel for these accidents. Rich and famous people will then think twice about speeding but then again the ones in government and ones with political connections are probably the biggest culprits so I don't see this happening.
