Bad accident - Audi vs Discovery 3

Apparently the Audi was doing around 280kmh when it lost control, aquaplaned into the opposite land and t-boned into the Disco.

There's no way an A4 is going to be doing 280. An RS4 would (arguably) maybe manage it in idea conditions assuming the speed limiter has been removed...

+1 - there is simply no way whatsoever it could have been doing 280kmph - maybe above 200 - if it was a downhill with a tail wind.

The 2.0T is really not such a overly powerful car, i.e. he would have had to be really pushing the limits of the car to reach such a speed - very difficult in rainy conditions.

Yes. Later it's mentioned that it is a 2.0T.... max speed is around 240-ish... and that's in ideal test conditions.

It's not supposed to.... but it's very unlikely that you will max the speedo on ie a German car..... my car can do 240 but the speedo goes to 280....

The A4 3.2 FSI has a top rated speed of 250kmph
The S4 has a top rated speed of 250kmph.


So we can assume these cars are limited electronically to these speeds.

However - for a 2.0T engine to reach (assuming it was the 2.0T and not the S4) the engine would have to be working seriously hard.

One also have to consider that it is highly unlikely he has tires rated to 250+ kmph.

I am not anywhere saying that the guy was not speeding. Or that he is innocent. But the claims of him doing 280kmph - or "well in excess of 200 kmph" I find dubious.

I read somewhere he was driving the 2.0T - it is possible it was the old 2.0T which did not produce 155kw of power like the new FSI model....
 
I think the force of the impact could have moved the speedo needle. he could have even been rolling before the accident.

Pretty likely that he was speeding, but we will never know for sure.

Lesson learned kids - dont A) speed, especially in wet and dark conditions, B) drive at 4AM in the morning after partying. Not that he was drunk - he probably wasnt - but he would have been damn tired. I know I would have been.
 
iv been in a golf 5 gti that can go to 240 on the clock ....on a nice stretch 210 comes easily once in sports mode ...so i dont think 280 is even anywhere near possible but 200/220 is attainable for this car since i think it has the same +-150kw motor just abit more weight

Thinking over that (and, yes, I also did 190km/h once only) it makes you realize that the world is going very fast, and if something goes wrong (tyres bursting etc) you're done with... :eek: :sick:

Never again. Only that once.



And also - not all speedo's are 100% accurate.

Try going on a Bike where it's restricted to 299 and the limiter hits like you've hit the ref limiter. But it feels as if the bike is still picking up speed. I did that on a few occasions and I can tell you that at that speed, when you see a car on the horizon you need to already start moving over to pass. Cars doing like 160km/h on the highway looks like they are stationary next to the road. It's insane.

I take my hat off to people who can maintain such speeds for long distances. I can only hold it for a minute at most then I need to pull over and have a smoke, it tires you out so much mentally it's ridiculous.

In the few times I have done it I have only passed 2 cars and there was no other cars on the road. I only passed them as when you approach them or see them on the horizon you're already just about past them.

Friend of mine took his CBR1000 to 300.... only once.... at 300 there is an electronic engine cutout. You should know what happens when you are at speed and suddenly leave the accelerator.
 
2 weeks ago I saw a guy flip his CBR in Malibongwe at a traffic light.
He thought he was going to pop a wheelie from pull off.
It didn't work out so lekka.

His bike was wrecked (flipped end-over-end and landed on the median) + he had some nasty roasties + all the traffic passing him laughed.

He did NOT have a great Christmas.

Nubblet.... I dislike smart-ass motorcyclists.... I've often had close-calls when they think they're funny.

speedos are off by not much minimum few % ..normally speedo shows 120 and you be doing 110 or 112 ...

but yeah the thoughts of something happening is real just that most new cars have tyres and stuff equipped to reach those speeds safely

but its not nice and yes all you wonder is of something on the road but with new cars and lots of power its easy for them to go fast quickly

bikes i cannot imagine ever doing so high speeds ...but guys do it on open roads at early times

It was an A4 which isnt a hatch, but yeah im with you on the safety of small but powerful hatches.

The Impact if it was on the driver side of the Audi would have been insanely huge. Big enough to push the needle all the way to the right if it was anywhere past 100km/h.

Indeed. But we all know it was a heck of a lot more than just 100km/h...... stupid drunk drivers....
