IMHO the big SUVs are much safer during a smash - simply because there is a lot more of it to absorb the impact, and generally they are structurally more rigid for offroading.
 
The downside of the bigger SUV's is :

1. Tyre replacement cost
2. Higher fuel use
3. Slow travel

Upside is

1. Safety
2. Arrive more relaxed at destination due to having to travel slowly - and can appreciate more of the beautiful country instead of having to watch the road like a hawk
3. More space
4. BUNDU BASHING!!!

However, no car is 100% guaranteed to protect your loved ones - a fully-loaded truck with faulty brakes can flatten any SUV just as well...

SUV tyres might be expensive, but you get a lot more mileage on them.
I get 45k on a set of tyres with the Merc....
Bakkies/SUV's get up to 80-100k :/
 
SUVs are much much stronger than normal cars but german sedans are just as strong and just that this guy decided to hit something at a very high speed

i remember we met an accident with a rxi shape toyota corrolla , a microbus hit us from behind and we hit the merc in front ...that guy had just a small dent in boot while our cars front was a write off....

Well, at least that applies to Defenders - you do not want to have an accident in one of these, ever! Which is why on tar we drive 110kmh max and on gravel 60-80kmh max. I cannot even count the times we have been overtaken on local and Namibian gravel roads by Fortuners towing trailers doing over 120kmh.

One of the issues with modern SUVs is that they are trying to compete with sports cars, e.g., Disco4/RRS and people tend to drive them like they are sports cars. I mean, why the F would you need to develop an SUV's handling at the Nurburgring?

Libs,

The tires on my Clubcab is R 1500 a piece (cheap ones) But, I have already done over 80k km's on them and they still seem to be only 1/2 way used still. You get allot more Km's out of them as the thread is insanely thick/deep.
 
Wonder what this guy thought he would be doing the next day. Bet he didn't imagine his guts would be over the engine and his legs ripped from his torso... but hey, reckless speeder's got to speed recklessly and injure other people.
 
Just a thought on the Audis top speed in the pics: was it completely standard, or tuned?

There are 2 things in favour of the bigger SUV's:

. Weight they are on average twice as heavy as normal cars. (Weight plays a massive part in an accident and the heaviest vehicle suffers the least amount of force)
. Ride height (In a head on my bakkie would prob climb over 80% of the normal cars. If not it will take the blunt of the force at the bottom of the engine bay instead of head force head on.

Either way, your better off not ever making or being in an accident ofc :p

but yeah like naks said ...these days you get huge and you get those that are battling with top end cars ....so they more lower and lighter

From a tyre perspective, I am paying through my bum right now anyway. Those runflats on a 3 series cost an arm and a leg and a kidney (R3K!!) so I cant see an SUV being more expensive.

The fuel use I can take, most of it is company subsidised to its not a huge deal.

The big issue I would think is getting used to driving at a rational pace. Its a complete mind shift from my last three cars and I wonder how I will cope. Pics like the Audi are very motivational though...

Oh and parking these things may also be an issue...

no ...with cameras all round it becomes easy lol

parallel parking a voyager long wheel base is the worst thing ever ....sucks a$$ but reverse parking is way easy with rear camera

Just reverse park. No issue then what so ever. I have no issues parking in any form or shape. But I prefer reverse parking if I can.
