Yeah, X5 M was in the top 5 for production car 1/4 mile speeds. For an SUV, that's just silly!

Seriously? We paid R1200 for Michelin/Bridgestone runflats for the bmw.

I Bought a 2002 Ranger Rover 4.6 HSE Vogue for R120k.
Discovery 3 is now just under R200k 2nd hand.

There is bargains out there, you just have to look and have the cash ready to pounch on it. And PLEASE don't buy a Freelander 1!!!

the problem with that is that when you do buy 2nd hand and something breaks you pay more than brand new price to fix it

i just love the new range rovers ...especially the dual screen

Well, you can be almost guaranteed that the drive shaft to the back will be busy going.
Engine / gearbox / drive-shaft all fail regular. It's the black sheep of the Land Rover family.
Freelander 2 is awesum thou. :D
Rather buy a Discovery 2 which is bigger, more capable and less prone to breaking down.
They can be picked up for R50-70k.

Yup, I have these ridiculous 18" on my car and with some odd profile on the back two which make it worse. Went through to the dealer yesterday for a new front left (replacing for a bubble that was on the car when I bought it) and the invoice price was R3 200...

Depends on the SUV - but they're generally closer to 5k per tyre.

Yep, 5.5k for my tyres. I started a tyre fund when I bought the car, can replace all 4 if something happens :D
 
That'll teach them to buy the wrong German sedan, would have been better off if it was an Opel Insignia - not even two trucks can kill you on one of those !

What is the likelihood of an SUV tipping over and rolling during a side impact ? I mean the body is sitting quite high compared to a normal car.

It depends on the centre of gravity and the stiffness of the suspension. Also the coefficient of static friction - the easier the car is able to be pushed sideways, the higher the chance that it will move sideways.
 
I did not see this mentioned earlier when I skimmed through the pages but my theory is that the speedo may have showed a higher speed due to the wheels spinning without resistance

The article stated he was aquaplaning. He could have tried to accelerate heavily when this started to try regain control/traction ( ie if drifting on a dry surface/gravel road etc). While aquaplaning, and with little friction resistance and no weight for them to propel, it is possible to spin the wheels at higher speeds than the speed the vehicle actually travels.

This would explain the higher speedo reading.


Just a theory though

I got 255/35/19 tires on my cab (Audi A6 3.2 FSI Quattro). Hit a massive pothole about a year back (looking in the left mirror while changing lanes so missed it). Burst front right and damaged rear right.
Cost R5,300 a tire. Thankfully I could claim back from insurance.
